A lot of the people on the left who immediately presumed the search of Mar-a-Lago was about January 6 are now taking at face value the media rumor that the search was actually about Trump’s failure to hand over nuclear codes or some such.
I have a personal theory.
The search comes after the search of Jeffrey Clark’s home and the seizure of John Eastman’s cell phone. It comes the day before the FBI seizes Congressman Scott Perry’s cell phone and several Pennsylvania legislators are targeted. It comes after multiple press reports that Attorney General Garland had changed his mind about pursuing Trump over January 6 and was now willing to go down that road.
That can’t be a coincidence.
So, as Andy McCarthy suggested at National Review, presume the federal government had been trying to retrieve documents. They got back fifteen boxes. But they alleged to a federal court that some of the documents that should have been with those boxes were missing. They used that excuse to search Mar-a-Lago for evidence to directly tie Trump to the plotting of the incursion into the Capitol.
They did not find the smoking gun they were looking for. So they leak to a very compliant press that they really were just looking for classified documents related to the nuclear codes.
Look, the left is, at this point, epistemically convinced Donald Trump plotted, planned, and organized the riot on January 6th. They truly believe there was a master plan to overthrow the government. They truly believe Trump is a threat to democracy.
When you believe all these things, you’re going to try to find that one smoking gun to stop Trump from running for office again.
They tried. They seemingly did not find it. They’ve had to fall back on their excuse about classified documents knowing a very compliant press won’t ask too many questions.
In truth, we should note, Trump gave them the excuse by keeping documents the National Archives wanted back. But sending the FBI to search the former president’s home over the Presidential Records Act is overkill, regardless of the nature of the documents involved.
Since I've lost all trust and confidence in our "leaders," I don't trust them not to plant something in the seized papers incriminating enough to discredit him.
Passwords and codes are changed very frequently to keep them secure. The “Nuclear Football” codes are no exception. The usual suspects and their heavy handedness makes everyone believe this was a fishing expedition to find some trivial item to keep Trump from running in 2024.
He can afford lawyers, can you? Ponder on that if you think that you are secure in your home under the 4th Amendment.
