The Republican National Committee platform has passed out of committee. It “softens” socially conservative language, getting rid of lines in support of heterosexual marriage and nationwide restrictions on abortion.
Pro-life activists are mad. They wanted clear denunciations of abortion and instead got muddied language and support for IVF, something many pro-life Christians actually oppose.
Here’s the reality: Donald Trump knows those upset will still vote for him. If they didn’t abandon him after the Access Hollywood tape, they are not going to abandon him now. They want power and he gives them that. Many of them used scripture to justify abandoning the evangelical belief that character matters in a President — a position they insisted on when Clinton was President, but then found themselves supporting a serial adulterer. Much of the pro-life moment has long put practical politics ahead of principle. The abolitionists are not going to go far in the Party of Trump. And the GOP is Trump’s Party.
Second, Donald Trump put three Justices on the United States Supreme Court who killed Roe v. Wade. A nationwide ban on abortion, even at 15 weeks, would not pass the United States Senate, so why spend capital on it when he already eliminated Roe?
Third, the pro-life movement is divided between a federalist response at the state level and a national moratorium on abortions at some point during pregnancy. Donald Trump just imposed order on the process.
Finally, platforms are meaningless generally and, with Donald Trump, in particular. He makes up his mind by relying on his gut in each situation and is not going to be bound to any platform from the RNC platform to Project 2025.
I don't understand why people cannot or will not understand the 10th Amendment. If you want a national anything that doesn't appear in the Constitution, you have to pass a constitutional amendment to get it. Otherwise, just like Roe, it is unconstitutional. That's the structure the founding fathers wisely created. Fight this battle at the state levels and you'll win. Try to fight it at the federal level and you'll ultimately lose. It's very simple. Ah, but the GOP just can't stand victory and always have to figure out a way to snatch defeat from its jaws. We won the abortion debate. It lies at the state level. Let's move on to school choice so we can hold our gains by breaking the monopoly on telling the story about how and why our country was founded or we'll lose everything in the short-sightedness of the modern GOP.
As a PRO-LIFE person, I would like to ask others to vote in their state to make any change to Pro-Life. When a Pro-Life Center was only about 3 years old, my wife, a nurse, started to volunteer there a lot of hours every week and I was elected to the board of Directors. We spent 13 years there and it really grew from a rented couple of rooms in a three story building, to owning the whole building, and one paid staff to eight paid staff. And shortly after my wife passed away from Cancer, I left as well and a young man took over as the Director of the Center. That was about 20 years ago. He has taken it to where they just opened the FOURTH location in a major city with owning most locations and still growing. This is in a proabortion state.
