Avoiding The Conspiracies
Isaiah 8:11–13 (ESV): For the Lord spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying:
12 “Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread.
13 But the Lord of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
I am increasingly concerned at the number of conspiracy theories conservatives are ready and willing to accept without evidence. For instance, Sam Bankman-Fried is a progressive donor and Sam Brinton is a radical LGBTQ activist who was a member of the Biden administration. SBF was arrested this morning for financial fraud surrounding the collapse of FTX while two states have charged Sam Briton for stealing thousands of dollars worth of luggage at an airport.
Immediately, some conservative journalists claimed these men (yes, men) would not be arrested or prosecuted due to their connections. This makes sense at first glance. We know Joe Biden’s Justice Department is blatantly biased against conservatives thanks to the news breaking earlier that they intended to target conservative pro-life activists as payback for Roe v Wade. Further proof is the ongoing story that Merrick Garland refused to protect conservative SCOTUS judges by enforcing a law on the books that prohibits protesting outside of their homes. Let’s be honest, the Biden administration has earned our skepticism.
Regardless, by faith and without proof, conservatives bought and pushed the narrative that both of the Sams would get away completely free. It didn’t happen. Sam Bankman-Fried is facing eight felonies while Sam Brinton was fired from the Biden administration and is now being prosecuted.
While conspiracy theories are intellectually tantalizing and help explain an increasingly unexplainable world, a movement grounded in truth must first wait for the facts before jumping to the conspiracy.
To take this to its logical conclusion, a party that wholeheartedly buys into conspiracy theories inevitably nominates horrible candidates and loses elections. Take a moment and listen.
