Buying The ProPublica Lie

ProPublica is running a hit piece on alleged impropriety between Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and Paul Singer. According to ProPublica, Singer - a billionaire GOP megadonor - brought Alito on an Alaskan fishing trip 15 years ago at a luxury resort before a case was brought to the Supreme Court involving Singer that Alito ruled in his favor. Sounds bad, right? Not so fast.

The luxury fishing resort now was much closer to a fishing camp back then. Singer brought multiple people on the trip and the private flight was happening with or without Alito. In fact, Singer saved the American taxpayer money by flying private so Alito’s bodyguard would not have to travel with him. Singer’s case before the Surpeme Court wasn’t so much Singer’s case as it was a matter that Singer was tangentially affiliated with. The connection was so minor that court staff who look for instances of impropriety never saw a connection at the time. In fact, Singer was behind the SCOTUS case pushing to legalize gay marriage which Alito voted against.

Without question, the most damning rebuttal to the ProPublica story is that Samuel Alito was not hiding this. Shortly after the event happened, Alito told the story to a room full of journalists, none of whom decided the story was worth pursuing.

The media coverage of ProPublic’s story is perhaps the most troubling. ProPublica is a noted left-wing outfit that recently only attacks right-wing SCOTUS members. Yet, if you follow any of the coverage online, in addition to missing the details listed above, mainstream outlets treat ProPublica’s claims as completely legitimate.

ProPublica's choice to twist a story from 15 years ago with the media’s blessing tells you everything you need to know about the current state of national media.
