Growing up Jewish, while I have read the Book of Mark, I never read it carefully enough to fully take in how Jesus reduced the essence of the Ten Commandment to two. What a beautiful summary and a beautiful tribute to a great and wise woman.
And a good reminder to us all of what matters most.
Another reminder of the common ground between our two faiths.
I'll have to copy out Mark 12:29-31, words so consistent with the essence of my Jewish faith.
As Erick so frequently quotes from Jeremiah 29:7 ESV -- "But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare."
Dolly Parton did just that, no matter what community she was in during any particular stage of her life, she simply helped whomever she found to be in need - and often while seeking no recognition for her good efforts.
Erick, I’m not a great basketball fan, but to borrow some terminology from that game, your post this morning about Dolly Pardon is a “Slam Dunk.”
I didn’t know all of the things that she did, but I did know that she had a kind heart from things that I had read about her. Her favorite four letter word was LOVE.
If ever there was anyone who sums up all that's best about humanity, it's Dolly Parton.
When wildfires burned out Gatlinburg, she put up $1 million of her own money to help rebuild. With her financial backing, over 900 families received almost $9 million in cash, with none of it eaten up by bureaucracy or grifters.
Enjoy your golden wings, Dolly. You have certainly earned them!
I was listening to your show when the news was announced and Dolly Parton became the story. Interesting to hear how it happened. Considering your upcoming Not Safe for Radio show.
Erick, this is beautifully written about a truly beautiful person and role model. And I know you are sincere in your words. But you made the carve out by using the new favorite catch phrase of the Christian right, "suicidal empathy." How about we provide the empathy and let God decide if it was suicidal or "too much" empathy. Because what I see in our government is everything but empathy in any form. I'm going to try to err on the too much side.
We Christians are told to store our treasures in Heaven. As Job said, you came into the world naked and you will leave naked. Your earthly wealth will be fought over by your family and the IRS. Everyone can make a difference in today. Even something small. The world is changed by your example, not by your opinions.
Erick, thank you for this.

Thanks for this. A great piece, Erick.
Someone like Dolly seems harder and harder to find, but maybe I'm just not looking carefully enough.

Just read a quote from Dolly during some interview . "If you want the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain". Sound advice.

Thank you for your thoughts on Dolly Pardon.
Thank you, Erick. This is a beautiful tribute to an icon. God broke the mold after creating Dolly.
Erick - thank you for this loving and convicting reminder!
This should the sermon in every church across America this Sunday!
An uplifting read to start the day. Beautifully said.

“…. loving your neighbor has no exceptions and it is a personal, not corporate obligation.” Dolly lived this. R.I.P.

Government is incapable of showing "empathy". That is not its function. Empathy is for individuals to demonstrate, or not.
Government . . . or you?
Are you incapable of understanding what I wrote?
Usually. I generally don't find that what you write makes a lot of sense.
One of your best. Thank you.

Bullseye!
Beautiful, Erick. If only we all had a portion of who Dolly was in our hearts. It is never too late, friends.
This is a wonderful tribute to read.
