HB 225 is now in the Georgia State Senate.
Lobbyists have given $150,000 to Lt. Governor Burt Jones hoping he and the Senate GOP will hill the legislation.
HB 225 would kill the speed camera law in the state of Georgia.
A local sheriff has come out and said the law is unconstitutional.
New evidence in Bibb County, Georgia, shows that the local government has exhibited racially discriminatory bias and placed the cameras only around schools in white neighborhoods, avoiding any school that is majority minority.
In Cherokee County, cameras are being set to issue tickets on days when the statute prohibits their operation.
In dozens of counties, local governments give tickets outside school zone times.
In one county, the local government has issued $8 million in tickets, with many of those tickets falling outside the reduced speed school zone times.
This is not about school safety. In most areas of the state, the schools where cameras are placed are set back from the road, have no sidewalks, and are inaccessible to pedestrians.
Likewise, there is zero evidence that the cameras were needed.
But private corporations are making massive amounts of money off Georgia taxpayers with cameras often set up in violation of the underlying statute, but people do not know and are bullied to pay the fines.
