Here’s How Lame Yesterday Was in the Senate Impeachment Trial
CNN is still giving overwhelming exposure to John Roberts admonishing the House floor managers after Jerry Nadler accused Senate Republicans of engaging in a cover up. Joe Lockhart went on CNN to claim the Chief Justice was really admonishing the GOP. Even the news anchors wouldn’t buy it.
As an aside, it is nuts that CNN let Joe Lockhart, a partisan Democrat, on TV the other day without a Republican counterpart as if Joe is a nonpartisan expert. Lockhart then went on Twitter to tweet Republican senators were privately saying they’d never heard all this stuff on Fox News. He wasn’t serious.
None of this happened yesterday. That’s the key thing for how lame yesterday was. The Chief Justice’s admonition came after midnight two days ago and it was, at sunrise this morning, still the big story on the front page of CNN’s website.
Yesterday, yet again, the GOP thought the GOP did well. The Democrats thought the Democrats did well. The media was like a bunch of drunk sorority sisters on Bourbon Street flashing their boobs for Adam Schiff. The partisan cheerleading for Schiff really is amazing. His press tour after this is over is going to be like an all nighter in the Olympic Village. After four hours, he and the press will have to see medical attention. Jerry Nadler got put in the witness protection program for his antics and is officially the turd in the Democrats’ impeachment punchbowl. When a reporter tried to ask Nadler a question yesterday before the trial, Schiff stepped in front of him and said he’d be doing all the talking.
Mitch McConnell is, naturally, the boogey man for the press in the past twenty-four hours. It is suddenly dawning on the media that McConnell really is in charge and this thing isn’t going anywhere. In the first twenty-four hours, the press was all giddy that McConnell had been put in his place by Senate Republicans, but nobody puts baby in a corner.
We had spectacle. We had arguments. We had the GOP and Democrats playing different games. The Democrats were so cute they actually made arguments about removing the President based on the totality of existing evidence. Adam Schiff even said the 2020 election could never be considered fair if Trump weren’t removed lest he steal it. When Trump, in October, suggests the election is being rigged against him, the very same members of the press who cheered Schiff yesterday will excoriate the President for saying the same thing.
As for the President’s legal team, they kept making process arguments and made the case about the Democrats engaging in a partisan hit job. The media, of course, did not take any of those sorts of arguments seriously because the media has totally bought the Democrats’ line. The Democrats were playing to reporters. The GOP was playing to its base. The Democrats tried to make a persuasive case that persuaded exactly no one. The GOP just fired up the money counting machines and got major cash from contributors.
We will get the same thing again today. You’ll love the Democrats if you already do. You’ll love the GOP if you already do. You’ll hate your life if you have to watch any of it. Americans will go to work and forget it is even happening. In four weeks, we will be on to something else. Oh look, Greta Thunberg is scowling again.
