While everyone else is distracted by the McCarthy fight for speaker, many of the implications of the fight have been ignored. One of the McCarthy concessions to Chip Roy regarding the appropriations process will now force congress to vote on 12 separate appropriations bills. This is a good thing and will go a long way in preventing congress from governing by crisis. However, the speaker's fight also has direct implications for Ukraine funding, fixing the border crisis, and defense spending. Take a moment and let me explain.

Erick could you comment on whether you believe the routine kabuki theater of the "debt ceiling fight" is worthwhile? To me it seems just another time waster that allows congressmen to continue posturing rather than governing. I've read that the president has the ability to order the US mint to issue a trillion dollar coin that can then be sold to the Federal Reserve, obviating this posturing. I think that would be a good idea - what are your thoughts?
I find it shameful that there are "conservatives" who don't see the rightness of supporting Ukraine in this fight. In light of that position the request to reduce Defense spending by some $70B seems amazingly coincidental. I'm not sure I believe that part about wanting to put pressure on the DoD to cut inefficient programs. I guess it would depend on which "conservative" mouth that soundbite came from.
