Amen, Erick! I think formal religion has done more to drive people away from Christianity than secularism luring people into its web of sin. I am an AlAnon member and have been for decades. In my view, one of the biggest barriers for a lot of the members, especially the new ones, is a belief in a 'Higher Power'. And it is essential to the program that we let go and let God in order to heal. Many have come from a punitive, rule following, judgmental, graceless form of religion and they just can't bring themselves to believe God is love and grace. I think many COME to that belief, but it takes time. Seeing all of this in-fighting amongst Christians certainly won't make believing in the love, forgiveness and grace of God any easier.
