Harrison Butker is the kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs and is a three-time Super Bowl champion with Travis Kelcey and Patrick Mahomes. He is beloved by KC and has one of the best-selling jerseys in the NFL. But the league is distancing itself from Butker over a commencement address he gave at Benedictine College over the weekend.
Butker criticized Biden for claiming to be a catholic while proudly flaunting his pro-abortion stance and making the sign of the cross at a pro-abortion rally. Butker railed against transgender ideology and praised his own wife for leaning into her calling to be a homemaker.
Oddly enough, the media outrage over Butker’s shots at Biden, abortion, and transgenderism pale in comparison to his passing comments on his wife being a homemaker.
If Butker was a middle school football coach and made those comments, no one would care. If he was a prominent evangelical pastor, few would care. If he was a Republican running for statewide office, the story would catch a headline and then quickly die. But Harrison Butker is part of the elite. He graduated from Georgia Tech, plays in the NFL, and is on the same team as Taylor Swift’s boyfriend. He should know better.
The media is outraged because Harrison Butker shared a commonly held Catholic view at a Catholic university that happens to be contrary to the conventional wisdom of the American elite. Instead of emphasizing inclusivity, the NFL and the mainstream media have determined that Harrison Butker must be condemned because he wanted students to know that his wife enjoys being a homemaker. Watch:
As someone who once attended a Protestant seminary and then decided to become Catholic on my own (before I met my wife), I might be looking for a Butker jersey real soon.
People just seem to want to get bent out of shape about anything these days.
Instead of actually listening to the whole speech, and letting this man, who is admired and loved by many, share his beliefs and the beliefs of many of his audience, they prefer to let social media, or dishonest "news" media companies, tell them what to believe and get everyone's dander up in the process.
As far as what the NFL thinks, does anyone really care? He is on the Chief's football team because of his talent. He was not speaking for the team, and I, for one, was happy to see a man standing up for his beliefs without fear.
