The United States Supreme Court will soon, maybe as soon as today, decide several cases related to affirmative action. It is my hope that the Supreme Court decides it is finally time to rid our nation of programs of race based programs that judge people by the color of their skin.
In California, the racists tried reaffirming affirmative action and placing it into law. In the 1990’s, California voters passed a proposition banning affirmative action. Since then, progressives told themselves that it was white Californians who had done this and, by 2020, surely the non-white plurality would store the racist policies.
The New York Times, of all places, has a review of what happened. Every major politician, every major company, every sports team, every union, etc. — they all came out in support of the proposition that would reinstitute race based admissions policies at California universities.
But the people, led by non-white Californias, killed the measure. Joe Biden beat Donald Trump and Proposition 16 lost with 57% of voters voting against it. Even in Los Angeles County, it barely passed, but the majority of the state opposed it overwhelmingly.
“Vote for racial justice!” urged the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California.
None of these efforts persuaded Jimmie Romero, a 63-year-old barber who grew up in the working-class Latino neighborhood of Wilmington in Los Angeles. Homelessness, illegal dumping, spiraling rents: He sat in his shop and listed so many problems.
Affirmative action was not one of those.
“I was upset that they tried to push that,” Mr. Romero recalled in a recent interview. “It was not what matters.”
Mr. Romero was one of millions of California voters, including about half who are Hispanic and a majority who are Asian American, who voted against Proposition 16, which would have restored race-conscious admissions at public universities, and in government hiring and contracting.
The left has pushed very hard for non-white Americans to believe they are victims and the nation is systemically racist. The non-white voters themselves are increasingly rejecting the idea. It is time for the United States Supreme Court to do the same.
