Reality Dawns Post State of the Union
We really are going to go bankrupt as a nation. The fiscal recklessness of both parties matters terribly. The loss of federalism cheered on by the GOP last night was horrible. The speech was crafted well, it was well delivered, and it was probably the best State of the Union address ever given. It was custom tailored for twenty-first century televised life.
But we are so screwed as a nation. The only major saving grace is that this speech will be forgotten by the end of the week. They always are. Every President comes in with a laundry list of items, more during election years, and they are all mostly forgotten by the next week.
This President too has a remarkable ability of stepping on his momentum. The President’s job approval rating comes as he has largely stayed directly out of the media, only trickling in through coverage of impeachment that only indirectly ties to him at this point. His tweets and camera appearances reduced, the public is focused on his presidency and not him directly. That has helped. Their most engaging encounter with his was last night’s speech and it was well done. No one remembers lines any more. They remember moments. There were many memorable moments in a speech we’ll otherwise forget by next week.
But we will pour all our energy into analysis of the speech, what it means (we’re broke), what it will mean, and where we are headed as a nation. The reality is it won’t matter, we will forget all about it next week, and we are going bankrupt in a bipartisan spending binge.
But at least we’ll mostly avoid the coronavirus.
