Election Night
The Trump-backed Daniel Cameron stomped the DeSantis-aligned Kelly Craft in a 12-way Kentucky gubernatorial primary to determine who would take on Andy Beshear in the fall. In a not-so-veiled shot at DeSantis in his victory speech, Cameron said, “The Trump culture of winning is alive and well in Kentucky.”
The decimated Democratic state party in Florida won a much-needed morale boost with Democrat Donna Deegan defeating her Republican challenger to become the first female mayor of Jacksonville, Florida. The stunning upset was best explained by Marc Caputo who described Deegan’s campaign as centrist and polite while the Republican ran a hard-right campaign that ignored purple voters. While DeSantis endorsed the Republican, it appears he did not put the full weight of his campaign apparatus behind him. Regardless, DeSantis endorsees went 0/2 last night.
The moderate Cherelle Parker won the nomination to be Philadelphia’s Democratic nominee for mayor. The win was noteworthy as Parker trounced a progressive challenger with deep-pocket donors.
Democrats Vote Against Dead Police
Rashida Tlaib and Cori Bush were the only two Democrats to vote against a resolution named, “Resolution memorializing law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.”
Why they did it: After taking a great deal of heat from both sides, Tlaib and Bush said they support first responders but stated, “This resolution is not a referendum on support for the safety of first responders. It is a document intended to advance Republicans’ false narrative around supporting law enforcement and gaslight the public about where they stand." Full story at Fox News.
Tuberville’s Reinforcements
Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville has been blocking hundreds of promotions for military personnel over the Pentagon’s decision to provide funding, transportation, and three weeks of paid time off for any military member or dependant who decides to have an abortion. While Chuck Schumer and Biden deputies have levied unmitigated attacks against Tuberville over the past few months, 3,000 veterans and active-duty members of the U.S. military signed a letter yesterday supporting his efforts. Good for Senator Tuberville.
Fake Book Bans
A progressive group claimed in The Wall Street Journal that thousands of books have been banned from public schools last year alone. The Daily Signal investigated and has the answers.
It is simply false that 2,532 books were removed from schools during the 2021-2022 school year. We know this is false because we examined online card catalogues and found that 74% of the books PEN America identified as banned from school libraries are actually listed as available in the catalogues of those school districts. In many cases we could see that copies of those books are currently checked out and in use by students.
Young Americans Are Dying at Alarming Rates, Reversing Years of Progress
Here’s your most depressing story of the day:
For decades, advances in healthcare and safety steadily drove down death rates among American children. In an alarming reversal, rates have now risen to the highest level in nearly 15 years, particularly driven by homicides, drug overdoses, car accidents and suicides.
The uptick among younger Americans accelerated in 2020. Though Covid-19 itself wasn’t a major cause of death for young people, researchers say social disruption caused by the pandemic exacerbated public-health problems, including worsening anxiety and depression. Greater access to firearms, dangerous driving and more lethal narcotics also helped push up death rates.
