Biden’s McCarthy Meeting
Following Janet Yellen’s announcement that federal funding could run out on June 1st, Joe Biden has asked for an in-person meeting with congressional leaders including Kevin McCarthy on May 9th.
Why this matters: House Republicans passed a bill that raises the debt ceiling and cuts spending in the five-seat Republican-controlled house. The White House contends that Biden has no plans of backing away from his demand for a clean debt ceiling increase.
Hollywood Writers Strike
For the first time in 15 years, Hollywood writers are going on strike. 11,500 writers for some of the most prominent movies and TV shows have announced they are going on strike after union reps were unable to reach a deal with major Hollywood studios.
What happened: Thanks to streaming, Hollywood studios are changing the way they produce shows in a technique pioneered by Netflix. Before streaming, studios would test a show by purchasing a pilot episode before committing to buying an entire season. Only after a season was purchased would writers finish writing the remaining shows in the season. Now, studios expect to buy shows that are fully written in advance and sometimes with multiple scripts.
Bottom line: The writers union contends that studios are requiring extra work from writers for the same pay. The union members voted 98% to 2% in favor of going on strike.
First impact: Late-night shows are expected to feel the impact first. Jimmy Kimmel Live, Saturday Night Live, Real Time with Bill Maher, and others are expected to go dark without writers.
Trump Goes on CNN?
Donald Trump has (shockingly) agreed to participate in a town hall event with CNN on May 10th. The event will be moderated by Kaitlan Collins in New Hampshire and will see the former president take questions from undecided Republican voters. Donald Trump has not appeared on the network since 2016.
Poor Hunter Biden
Hunter Biden’s lawyers painted him as financially strapped in his first appearance in an Arkansas court on Monday, as he sought to get his child support payments to his former mistress and their four-year-old daughter reduced.
The president’s son, who made millions of dollars off deals and cushy board positions for foreign companies in the past decade, now has no salary, had his Porsche repossessed, and was forced to sleep on a cot in his father’s room during a recent presidential trip to Dublin, Biden’s lawyers told the court. He has also stooped to taking financial support from a generous friend, Hollywood lawyer Kevin Morris, the court heard on Monday.

Mental health-related ER visits from patients between the ages of 6 and 24 doubled between 2011 and 2020 according to disturbing new data from The New York Times. Most notably, suicide-related issues topped the list jumping fourfold within the same time frame.
Loneliness
The US Surgeon General wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post (paywall) on the devastating effects of loneliness. His research indicates that the increased risk of premature death from loneliness is the exact same as smoking 15 cigarettes per day.
