Clip of the day:
Democrats Double Down On Abortion
Democrats have spent eight times as much as Republicans on ads highlighting abortion in key races since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade 50 days ago. This is from the New York Times (paywall):
“In Michigan, Democrats took aim at the Republican nominee for governor almost immediately after the primary with a television ad highlighting her opposition to abortion, without exceptions for rape or incest.
In Georgia, Democrats recently attacked the Republican governor in another television ad, with women speaking fearfully about the specter of being investigated and “criminalized.”
And in Arizona, the Republican nominees for both Senate and governor were confronted almost instantly after their primaries with different ads calling them “dangerous” for their anti-abortion positions.”
Afghanistan
On the one-year anniversary of Joe Biden’s botched Afghanistan withdrawal, Politico reports that 800 American citizens have been rescued from the country since the last American forces left. The number is significantly higher than Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s initial estimate of 100. An investigation by the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Republican staff provided the data and this previously unknown security concern:
“The investigation also uncovered evidence that a ‘significant’ number of elite, U.S.-trained Afghan commandos fled the country into Iran after the Taliban took control of the country, taking with them military equipment and vehicles.
If captured or turned, these commandos could prove to be a “serious national security threat,” according to the report, which states that the soldiers were trained by U.S. special operators and “know not only our tactics but who these elite military officials are.”
The fear is that these commandos may join terrorist groups, whether voluntarily or out of desperation. There is evidence that some of these fighters joined the Islamic State, according to the committee staffer.”

Salman Rushdie
Salman Rushdie was stabbed on stage Friday in front of a New York audience by a 24-year-old man with direct ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard. Rushdie, an author, was taken off of a ventilator but has sustained “life-changing injuries.”
This is from Vice:
“Rushdie lived under police protection for more than a decade following the 1988 publication of his novel Satanic Verses, which enraged much of the Islamic world with what was widely seen as a heretical depiction of the Prophet Muhammad. Ruhollah Khomeini, then Iran’s supreme leader, issued a fatwa – a religious edict – in 1989 offering a multi-million dollar reward for Rushdie’s murder.”
