Biden and Afghanistan
The White House is worried about an unreleased book from an Atlantic staff writer that paints an unflattering tale of Biden’s first three years in office. The book is based on a staggering 300 interviews between November 2020 and February 2023. If the subheadline from The Atlantic story is any indication, the White House is right to worry: Joe Biden was determined to get out of Afghanistan—no matter the cost. - The Atlantic
Related: An Afghan interpreter who worked closely with US special forces is trapped inside Afghanistan with the Taliban looking for him. The 41-year-old father of two told the Wall Street Journal, “If they recognize me, they will kill me.”
Backstory: This Afghan interpreter helped US special forces on dozens of missions by interpreting Taliban positions from intercepted radio transmissions more than a decade ago but was prevented from being evacuated in Biden’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. This man is one of 150,000 people waiting for the State Department to process a special visa to allow them to leave the country.
Like the others, his application is under review. According to the Afghan Allies Protection Act of 2009, the process should be completed within nine months, but the program has been mired in bureaucracy from the start. The State Department said in an email that it couldn’t estimate how long his application review would take
Idalia
Hurricane Idalia is projected to hit the Big Bend region of Florida as a Category 3 hurricane around 2 AM on Wednesday morning. The 120 mph projected storm is expected to bring an 8 - 12 foot storm surge above normal tide levels.
Could be worse: As bad as Hurricane Idalia looks, at least it is not Hurricane Franklin which currently sits as a massive category 4 storm in the Atlantic that is not expected to make landfall. The last time the Atlantic had two simultaneous hurricanes in August was 1886.
DeSantis: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has paused campaigning to return to Florida to handle the aftermath of the racially motivated shooting in Jacksonville and to coordinate the state’s hurricane response.
Haley
Nikki Haley is getting a second look following a strong performance in the first GOP debate. Attendance at campaign rallies has surged while her polling has shot up by 5 points according to an Emerson College survey.
More: The Haley campaign raised $1 million in the first 72 hours following the debate with more donations incoming.
Problems in Fulton?
The New York Times (paywall) says the Fulton County DA may have a harder time securing a guilty verdict against Donald Trump. Here’s the quote that
