Fallout From Biden’s Polling
Yesterday we covered the shocking ABC poll that showed Biden woefully behind Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis in head-to-head matchups with independents and African Americans fleeing the 80-year-old President. As a reminder, his approval rating hit an all-time low of 36% with more than 1 in 5 Democrats claiming he lacks the cognitive clarity to fulfill the duties of President.
Today, I give you a New York Times piece that perfectly explains why the poll is concerning to Democrats:
The data has left many Democrats feeling anywhere from queasy to alarmed. Mr. Biden’s case for being the pair of safe hands at a volatile moment is undermined in their view if a president who passed major legislation and presides over the lowest unemployment in generations cannot outperform a twice-impeached challenger who instigated an insurrection, has been indicted on multiple felonies, is on civil trial accused of rape and faces more potential criminal charges in the months to come.
The piece went on to say:
Joe Biden is asking the country to elect a candidate who will be 82 years old, who has clearly lost a step, running with a vice president whom almost no one in either party thinks is ready for prime time.
Al Gore’s 2000 campaign manager and former DNC chair Donna Brazile said the polling should be a wake-up call to Democrats.
“It’s sobering in the sense… that the coalition that elected Joe Biden with the historic numbers that we saw in 2020 – that coalition right now is fragmented. That should concern them.
After we hit send on yesterday’s Show Notes, Joe Biden spoke to the media in a botched speech that did not go well. First, Biden claimed Memorial Day is this upcoming weekend. Second, Biden gave the wrong web address TWICE in a botched rollout of a new government website. As expected, Biden did not take questions.
Border Chaos
The Border Patrol said “the dam is about to break” in reference to the surging number of migrants expected at the southern border as Title 42 expires on Thursday. The federal agency is reporting that 26,000 apprehensions were made and 7,000 "gotaways" were witnessed in the past 72 hours alone.
Whats happening: The scheduled ending of the COVID-19 health emergency means the Trump-era Title 42 order that allows for immediate expulsion of illegal immigrants will expire. Title 42 permits the Border Patrol to flattly deny illegal immigrants the ability of requesting asylum.
California Reparations
California Governor Gavin Newsom has been conspicuously silent after a task force recommended the state pay black residents up to $1.2 million each for reparations. The task force was formed from a piece of legislation championed by Newsom back in 2020.
Why this matters: Newsom is in an unwinnable position as he continues to signal larger ambitions. The Califonria budget deficit hit $22.5 billion last year with the potential of this proposal making the problem insurmountably worse.
Debt Talks
Joe Biden is scheduled to meet with the “big four” congressional leaders at 4 pm today as both sides appear contently entrenched in their positions ahead of a funding crisis. The Biden White House incorrectly assumed the politically diverse GOP House leaders would not be able to pass a debt package with their slim majority.
What happens next: Axios reports the Biden plan is to do events in the districts of House Republicans who won districts that also went for Joe Biden.
