Democrats Pounce (On Each Other)
As I predicted, Democrats are in a full-blown civil war over assigning blame for a midterm loss that is still 6 days away. Here are the theories:
Top Democrats told Axios that unpopular Democratic governors like California’s Newsom, New York’s Hochul, and Oregon’s Brown are dragging down congressional races.
Multiple Democrats lamented to The New York Times (paywall) that the party’s inability to address kitchen-sink issues is why Democrats will lose big on election night.
Moderate Democrats are complaining to Punchbowl News that redistricting and “defund the police” language used by progressive Democrats are hurting their chances at reelection.
My personal favorite: The New York Times (paywall) also reports that Barack Obama has been pleading with Democrats to not be “a buzz kill” when it comes to issues like race and gender.
🚨 Why does this matter: The Cooke Political Report moved 10 new house races in New York, Oregon, Illinois, and New Jersey in favor of Republicans just this morning.
Enthusiasm Gap
The enthusiasm gap between Republicans and Democrats in the 2022 midterm election is almost identical to the wave year of 2010 according to CNN. Here’s more:
Four years ago, 44% of Democratic registered voters said they were extremely enthusiastic about voting; now, just 24% say the same. Among Republicans, the number has dipped only narrowly, from 43% to 38%.
White Suburban Women
The same demographic that backed Democrats in 2018 and ditched Trump in 2020 is supporting Republican congressional candidates in record numbers in 2022 according to The Wall Street Journal (paywall). Since August, white suburban women have moved away from Democrats by 27% in one of the most momentous shifts in recent history.
What caused the shift? Suburban women lost faith in the Democrats’ ability to handle the economy. Here’s more:
“We’re talking about a collapse, if you will, in that group on the perceptions of the economy,” said Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio who conducted the poll with Democratic pollster John Anzalone. The poll showed that 54% of white suburban women think the U.S. is already in a recession and 74% think the economy is headed in the wrong direction.
