Debate
Last night’s Fox Business GOP debate went off the rails in spectacular fashion due to the moderators’ inability to control the stage. While Dana Perino was by far the most competent, Stewart Varney appeared lost, while Ilia Calderón asked questions seemingly written by the DNC.
More: The debacle of a debate wrapped up with an embarrassing grade school-esque question asking contenders to write the name of a candidate who should be voted off the island. Led by Ron DeSantis, the entire stage refused to participate. As I wrote this morning, we are all dumber for having watched it. I’d call it something other than a poop show, but the word I want to use is one I should not use.
Top Quotes
The debate was so unproductive that Ron DeSantis told Sean Hannity afterward, “If I was at home watching that, I would have changed the channel.” Regardless, here are the moments that made headlines.
Nikki Haley to Vivek Ramaswamy: “Every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber.” - Twitter
Ron DeSantis: “ We are not getting a mulligan on the 2024 election. Republicans have lost three straight elections in a row. We were supposed to have a red wave with inflation at 9%. It crashed and burned — not in Florida, it didn't, we delivered it in Florida.”
Chris Christie: “I want to look at that camera right now and tell you, Donald: I know you're watching. You can't help yourself. I know you're watching, OK? And you're not here tonight, not because of polls and not because of your indictments. You're not here tonight because you're afraid of being on this stage and defending your record.”
Mike Pence: “Well, first, let me say I'm glad Vivek pulled out of his business deal in 2018 in China. That must have been about the time you decided to start voting in presidential elections.”
Tim Scott to Nikki Haley: “What we need are leaders who lead by example. Nikki (Haley) offered a 10% -10 cent gas tax increase in South Carolina. Talk about someone who has never seen a federal dollar she doesn’t like. Ten cents on the gallon in South Carolina. As the UN ambassador, you literally put $50,000 on curtains at a $15 million subsidized location.”
Counter Programming
Donald Trump went to Michigan to speak to union workers in the midst of a labor strike against the big three automakers. However, Trump didn’t actually speak to union workers at all. Here’s the quote from Detroit News.
About 400 to 500 Trump supporters were inside a Drake Enterprises facility for the speech. Drake Enterprises employs about 150 people, and the UAW doesn't represent its workforce.
One individual in the crowd who held a sign that said "union members for Trump," acknowledged that she wasn't a union member when approached by a Detroit News reporter after the event. Another person with a sign that read "auto workers for Trump" said he wasn't an auto worker when asked for an interview.
Government Shut Down
House Republicans rejected a stopgap continuing resolution that was proceeding through the Senate, drastically increasing the odds of a government shutdown.
Why this matters: The rejection leaves a dwindling number of options available to fund the government beyond the deadline of Saturday night.
