The Trump Indictment
Donald Trump broke the news on Truth Social last night that he had been indicted by a federal grand jury in Miami for mishandling classified documents.
What we know: Trump will face seven criminal charges for possessing and conspiring to conceal classified documents pertaining to U.S. intelligence and defense plans that he kept at his Mar-a-Lago estate. The various charges range from violating elements of the Espionage Act to obstructing investigations and making false statements.
What we don’t know: The sealed indictment has not been made public and could remain under wraps until Trump heads to court on Tuesday. The historically risk-averse DOJ could request the court unseal it before then due to the politically charged nature of the case. Special Council Jack Smith has not released a statement yet.
Who is Jack Smith: Merrick Garland appointed Jack Smith to investigate Trump’s document case in November of last year in an attempt to alleviate partisan concerns by appointing a special council with no political affiliation. Since 1994, Jack Smith has had an impressive track record of prosecuting and winning major cases against mob bosses and war criminals in New York and for the Justice Department.
Additionally: Smith was tasked with a parallel mandate of investigating Trump’s role in interfering with the 2020 election. This separate investigation has moved much slower than the document case but is arguably a more damning charge.
What happens next: Trump will appear in Miami’s federal courthouse at 3 PM on Tuesday.

Americans Turn Right
As trans issues dominate the social discourse, a surging number of Americans are identifying as socially conservative according to Gallup. An additional 14% of Republicans and 5% of Democrats identify as “very conservative on social issues” reaching highs not seen in over a decade.
In less than three years, a growing number of Americans aged 18 to 64 reportedly identify as socially conservative according to the Gallup data. This trend fits with a New York Times piece published last week stating that Millenials are objectively moving to the right.
Over the last decade, almost every cohort of voters under 50 has shifted toward the right, based on an analysis of thousands of survey interviews archived at the Roper Center.
Relatedly, PRRI data found a growing number of Americans believe there are only two genders. Now a majority of Gen Z (54%) rejects the notion of multiple genders thanks to 14% shifting to the traditional view in less than three years.
Saudi Crown Prince Threatens United States
Last fall, President Biden vowed to impose “consequences” on Saudi Arabia for its decision to slash oil production amid high energy prices and fast-approaching elections in the United States.
In public, the Saudi government defended its actions politely via diplomatic statements. But in private, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman threatened to fundamentally alter the decades-old U.S.-Saudi relationship and impose significant economic costs on the United States if it retaliated against the oil cuts, according to a classified document obtained by The Washington Post.
