Michigan State

A 43-year-old with no connection to Michigan State killed three people on campus and wounded five more before turning the gun on himself.

Quote from police: "We have no idea why he came to campus to do this tonight."

Details: The first shots were fired at 8:18 PM with a number of police responding quickly to the scene. Despite law enforcement presence, the shooter moved to two additional locations firing shots along the way. The shooter ultimately turned the gun on himself around 11:30 PM when he was likely pinned down by police.

Background: The shooter pleaded guilty to a gun charge in 2019.

Train Derailment

Reluctant residents are allowed to return to their homes after a 150-car train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed in East Palestine, Ohio on February 3rd. The train - operated by Norfolk Southern - was carrying carcinogenic vinyl chloride and other chemicals used in plastic production.

What’s happening now: The Department of Natural Resources is reporting 3,500 fish were found dead in 8 miles of streams around the crash. WKBN is reporting that a viewer’s chickens - located 10 miles away from the accident - died as a result of the toxic fumes released. Full story here.

This is what they call a "controlled release" The train derailment in Ohio at a little town called East Palestine had at least 5 tanker cars full of toxic flammable chemicals, apparently the only options were to let it burn like this or it would go off like a bomb.

CDC: Teen Girls Are Hurting

A shocking report from the CDC claims that 3 in 5 teen girls feel "persistently sad or hopeless" and 30% have seriously considered suicide. The report alleges teenage girls are caught in a vicious cycle of violence and sadness thanks to increased sexual attacks and other traumatic experiences. This is from NBC:

"Our teenage girls are suffering through an overwhelming wave of violence and trauma, and it’s affecting their mental health," said Kathleen Ethier, director of the CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health.
