Israel

The Israeli military has continued its unprecedented assault on Hezbollah striking more than 800 military sites and killing at least 270 people on Monday morning in Beruit.

Details: The strikes primarily occurred in residential areas as Hezbollah leadership has embedded itself in civilian enclaves. The Israeli military sent automated text messages and hacked into a local radio station to urge residents to flee the area.

Context: The Israeli strikes came one day after Hezbollah launched more than 100 rockets into Israel’s northern city of Haifa. The Sunday attack was Hezbollah’s largest since the events of October 7th.

Sinwar: The Israeli military is attempting to determine if they accidentally killed Hamas Chief Yahya Sinwar in a recent airstrike in Gaza.

Biden Administration Proposes Ban on Chinese Software in Vehicles

The Biden administration announced a sweeping initiative on Monday to ban Chinese-developed software from internet-connected cars in the United States, justifying the move on national security grounds. The action is intended to prevent Chinese intelligence agencies from monitoring the movements of Americans or using the vehicles’ electronics as a pathway into the U.S. electric grid or other critical infrastructure.

The move, most likely the last major cutoff of Chinese products into the United States under the Biden administration, follows the same logic that resulted in the ban on Huawei telecommunications equipment and the investigations into Chinese-made cranes operating at American ports.

NYT: Venezuelan Gang’s Path to U.S. Stokes Fear, Crime and Border Politics

At the country’s southern border, U.S. Border Patrol agents have been on the lookout for members of a notorious Venezuelan gang. In the nation’s heartland, police officers from Denver to Chicago have made dozens of arrests for alleged crimes linked to the group, from retail theft to murder and prostitution.

And in New York City, police detectives have spent months interviewing informants — including confessed gang members — to identify gang leaders and gather information on robbery patterns and recruitment efforts.

The gang in question is Tren de Aragua, which sprang from a Venezuelan prison and developed into a feared criminal organization focused on sex trafficking, human smuggling and the drug trade.
