The Boebert Resolution

Lauren Boebert forced a motion to the House floor to impeach President Biden. The move shocked fellow Republicans and forced McCarthy to negotiate a last-minute deal sending the resolution to be reviewed by the Judiciary and Homeland Security committees.

Drama: Marjorie Taylor Greene called Boebert a “little bitch” on the House floor following the motion claiming that Boebert copied and pasted Greene’s articles of impeachment according to three sources. “I’ve donated to you, I’ve defended you. But you’ve been nothing but a little bitch to me.” Ouch.

Why this matters: The resolution is poorly timed and serves as a distraction from legitimate issues at play. More importantly, it is a stark reminder of the slim majority Republicans possess in the House. Read my full morning piece here.

Will Hurd

Speaking of bad ideas, Will Hurd announced this morning he is running for President. The former anti-Trump GOP Congressman from San Antonio has been making repeated stops in Iowa and New Hampshire, fueling speculation this announcement was imminent.

Who is this guy: Will Hurd is a three-term former congressman from a swing district outside of San Antonio on the US/Mexican border. Hurd served as a CIA clandestine operator before making the jump to politics but is best known for opposing Trump’s border wall. His last term ended in 2019 when he chose not to seek reelection the following year.

Biden Woos India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is getting the rare royal treatment in Washington, D.C. on a multi-day diplomatic visit. Modi is addressing a joint session of Congress, shared a private dinner with the Biden’s last night, and will participate in a state dinner tonight. South Korea’s Yeol and France’s Macron are the only two other country leaders to receive such treatment.

The announcement: The United States and India have agreed for GE to make jet engines in India as part of a larger bid to strengthen ties between the two countries assuming Congress approves. In return, India will purchase drones from a U.S. manufacturer and will allow US military ships to dock and seek repairs in Indian ports. Additionally, a Utah-based company will build a $2.75 billion semiconductor company in India.

Why this matters: As relations devolve between the United States and China while Russia remains all but a stated enemy, the Biden administration views India as a valuable trade and defense ally in an increasingly isolating world. A populous country with serious trade prospects may help the United States hedge against a trade relationship with China that continues to deteriorate.

Not so fast: India is now the largest country in the world but has stayed away from joining international calls to boycott Russia. In fact, The New York Times reported this morning that India is buying half of all sanctioned Russian oil after purchasing almost none this time last year.

The larger problem: Modi has faced heat in recent years for human rights abuses that include silencing journalists and political opposition leaders while cracking down on Muslim-Indian minorities.
