Democrats Hate Joe Manchin
Joe Manchin worked with fellow Democrats for over a year to craft climate legislation that could pass an evenly divided Senate, only to reject the proposal at the last minute. Manchin cited inflation and rising gas prices as the reason for rejecting the proposal. Regardless, Democrats are not handling the news well. This is from The New York Times:
Privately, Senate Democratic staff members seethed and sobbed on Thursday night, after more than a year of working nights and weekends to scale back, water down, trim and tailor the climate legislation to Mr. Manchin’s exact specifications, only to have it rejected inches from the finish line.
Following the Manchin news, President Biden announced he will take unspecified executive action on climate change.
Uvalde
Disturbing details about police inaction have emerged from the shooting in Uvalde, Texas that raise more questions than answers. Almost 400 law enforcement officers stood outside while 21 people were killed in an elementary school. A new report cites “systemic failures” that created a chaotic scene that lasted over an hour. Federal judge blocks Education Department’s Title IX guidance that protects transgender students
This is from Politico:
A federal judge temporarily blocked the Education Department’s Title IX guidance, which prohibits discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.
Eastern District of Tennessee Judge Charles Atchley in an order late Friday said the agency’s guidance “directly interferes with and threatens Plaintiff States’ ability to continue enforcing their state laws” that restrict transgender people from playing on sports teams and using bathrooms that match their gender identity.
Working Class and Hispanic Voters Are Losing Interest in the Party of Abortion, Gun Control and the January 6th Hearings

Strong progressives clearly live in a different world than Hispanic and working class voters. In strong progressive world, views on abortion, gun control and January 6th fit neatly into an overarching set of sociocultural beliefs that are highly salient to them and increasingly drive the Democratic party’s priorities and rhetoric. Hispanic and working class voters lack this overarching set of beliefs—in fact, don’t share many of them—and are much more concerned with the basics of their material lives. It should thus be no surprise that these voters are increasingly losing interest in the party of abortion, gun control and January 6th.
