Mitch McConnell Turns To Brian Kemp
McConnell is turning to Brian Kemp to help get Herschel Walker over the finish line. The Kemp campaign is loaning staff and assets to the Senate Leadership Fund for the next three weeks. Read the full story here.
My take: The non-Trump wing of the GOP will be the savior of Herschel Walker if Walker wins. In 2022, Trump tried to destroy Brian Kemp, spending more money against Kemp than for or against anyone else, including Liz Cheney. Trump’s accomplice was Georgia GOP Chairman David Shafer, who helped get candidates to run against Kemp, Georgia’s Secretary of State, Georgia’s Attorney General, and others. Because Kemp and the state GOP leaders don’t trust Shafer, they trusted Kemp to build the GOP ground game in Georgia. That ground game had to be separate from the federal effort because of campaign finance laws. Well, don’t look now, but Kemp just handed his hold ground game operation over to Mitch McConnell’s super PAC. It’s a turnkey operation and happens to be the best in Georgia. If Walker wins, it won’t be because of Trump, but because of Kemp and McConnell.
Three Big Election Updates
Republicans have botched one of the most vulnerable Senate seats handing Mark Kelly a win.
While Lauren Boebert’s race has not been called, it looks much more difficult for Boebert’s opponent to find a path to victory. Boebert was ahead at one point by 64 votes out of 300,000+ cast.
Democrats just won Nevada’s three vulnerable house districts with the overnight election update. The news puts Adam Laxalt’s chances of beating Catherine Cortez Masto in jeopardy. Currently, Laxalt is ahead by less than 9,000 votes with 90% reporting.
Donald Trump 2024
Trump is prepared to announce his 2024 bid on Tuesday at 9 PM. He spent much of the morning attacking Glenn Younkin and continuing his attacks on Ron DeSantis. Chis Christie had the best take over at AP News:
“We lost in ’18. We lost in ’20. We lost in ’21 in Georgia. And now in ’22 we’re going to net lose governorships, we’re not going to pick up the number of seats in the House that we thought and we may not win the Senate despite a president who has a 40% job approval,” he said. “There’s only one person to blame for that and that’s Donald Trump.”
Student Loan Forgiveness
A federal judge in Texas blocked Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan. The judge ruled that the HEROES Act did not give the Biden administration the broad power it interpreted to cancel student loans. Here’s more from CNN.
