Again
Senator Mitch McConnell appeared disoriented and unable to speak for roughly 30 seconds at a press conference in Covington, Kentucky. This is the second time the 81-year-old Senator has frozen in public since sustaining a concussion in March. McConnell’s team went into overdrive after the incident reassuring others that the Senator was feeling better.
Why this matters: GOP Senators and aids confirmed to CNN that it is unlikely McConnell will seek another term as Senate Majority Leader opening up the position for the first time since 2007. McConnell has been working to flip the Senate in next year’s election along with ensuring his former staffer Daniel Cameron defeats Democrat Andy Beshear in Kentucky’s gubernatorial election next year.
Age: As a growing number of Americans are increasingly worried about the mental capacity of again politicians, it is worth noting that McConnell is one of 19 lawmakers over the age of 80 along with President Biden who will be 81 later this year.
Feinstein: 90-year-old California Senator Dianne Feinstein recently gave power of attorney over to her daughter after a moment of confusion during a vote last month. While the Senator refuses to step down, the family is embroiled in a legal battle over the billion-dollar estate of Feinstein and her late husband.
Inflation
July’s inflation reading of 3% has been revised upward to 3.3% suggesting the Federal Reserve has a long road ahead of meeting its 2% target and increasing the likelihood of additional rate hikes.
The news comes as CNBC reports a growing number of Americans are facing new financial pressure.
61% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.
Only 45% of Americans report having an emergency fund.
26% of Americans have less than $5,000 in savings.
Chaos in Arizona
Insiders are confirming to The Wall Street Journal that Blake Masters is preparing to run for Kyrsten Sinema’s Senate seat setting up a chaotic primary and an unprecedented general election.
Primary: The announcement of Masters’ run sets him on a collision course with fellow Trump acolyte and failed GOP gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake who is leaning towards entering the race.
General: As an independent, if Sinema decides to run for reelection it creates the likely scenario of an unprecedented three-way race with neither the Republican nor the Democrat being the incumbent.
