New York Air
New York City’s air quality is currently the second worst in the world thanks to billowing clouds of smoke from hundreds of Canadian wildfires raging in the border province of Quebec. Multiple schools were closed and outdoor activities were canceled as parts of New York air contained 10 times the amount of pollutants considered safe to inhale.
The bad part: Canadian experts are claiming the wildfire season is their worst on record and likely far from over as wildfires typically peak towards the end of summer.
Ukraine Dam: “More and more water is coming every hour”
Water continues to rise in areas surrounding the Dnipro River in Ukraine’s Kherson region following the breach of the Kakhovka dam. The humanitarian crisis caused by the war is set to drastically worsen as tens of thousands of people have been displaced by the raging floodwaters. The Ukrainian government warned residents of floating mines that may have been displaced by the rising water.
Why this matters: Sitting on the literal front line of the war, the Dnipro River has been the dividing line for months between the Ukrainian and Russian-controlled areas of southern Ukraine. As Ukrainian forces mount a widely predicted counter-offensive, the attack ostensibly benefits the dwindling Russian forces by limiting the pathways the Ukrainians can attack.

Instagram Connects Vast Pedophile Network
Go read this from The Wall Street Journal (paywall):
Instagram, the popular social-media site owned by Meta Platforms, helps connect and promote a vast network of accounts openly devoted to the commission and purchase of underage-sex content, according to investigations by The Wall Street Journal and researchers at Stanford University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Pedophiles have long used the internet, but unlike the forums and file-transfer services that cater to people who have interest in illicit content, Instagram doesn’t merely host these activities. Its algorithms promote them. Instagram connects pedophiles and guides them to content sellers via recommendation systems that excel at linking those who share niche interests, the Journal and the academic researchers found.
How this happened: The Instagram algorithm is so good at finding and connecting people interested in niche content that pedophiles have leveraged the platform for their interests. While AI is able to automatically catch and block explicit images, more subtle content with obscure hashtags is much harder for AI to police.
What doesn’t make sense: It is still confusing as to why some of the overtly sexualized content has remained on the platform. While META has taken down 27 pedophile networks in the past two years, hashtags on Instagram like #pedowhore and #preteensex were allowed to remain without reprimand allegedly until The Wall Street Journal story was released.
Roasting The PGA Commissioner
Players on the PGA Tour had a tense meeting with Commissioner Jay Monahan yesterday following the news of the LIV merger. One player went so far as to call Monahan a hypocrite while another player received a standing ovation after calling for Monahan to be terminated. None of the players were warned of the pending merger.
Backstory: As LIV burst onto the scene last year, Jay Monahan begged PGA players to not jump ship to the Saudi-backed startup, citing the country’s connection to 9/11. Dozens of players turned down significant guaranteed paychecks because of this. Here’s Monahan’s quote and video clip:
"I think you'd have to be living under a rock not to know there are significant implications. I would ask any player who has left or any player who would consider leaving, 'Have you ever had to apologize for being a member of the PGA Tour?'"
