OPEC+ Stuns The World
OPEC+ shocked the world with a drastic cut in oil production that will send gas prices surging just five weeks before the midterms. The cut of 2 million barrels per day was twice the expected amount, leaving Biden administration officials furious.
Response: Joe Biden announced that 10 million additional barrels of oil would be released from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves to combat the rising prices within the next month. The United States had sanctioned Venezuelan oil due to the country's list of human rights abuses which included jailing Americans. That may be changing as The Wall Street Journal (paywall) reports the United States is beginning the process of scaling back Venezuelan sanctions to provide competition to OPEC+ oil.
Implications:
1) The historically low levels of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve will reach a frightening new low.
2) Russia will financially benefit from rising global oil prices and which will in turn fund their war in Ukraine.
3) Democrats are deeply concerned the move by OPEC+ will hurt them on election day.
