Scottie Scheffler
The world’s top golfer was arrested and faces felony assault charges from an incident that transpired early Friday morning at a PGA event in Louisville, Kentucky. The incident increasingly appears to have been a misunderstanding. Here are the charges facing Scottie Scheffler according to WAVE.
2nd-degree assault of a police officer (felony)
3rd-degree criminal mischief
Reckless driving
Disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic
Details: At 5:30 AM this morning, a pedestrian was hit and killed by a shuttle bus near Valhalla Golf Club impeding the flow of traffic before the PGA event began. While traffic was stopped and police were trying to move the shuttle bus, Scottie Scheffler allegedly drove on a spacious median to bypass the scene.
Chaos: A police officer physically attached himself to Scheffler’s PGA-designated car screaming at him to stop. When he stopped, the officer beat on the window with a flashlight demanding Scheffler get out. After Sheffler complied, the officer shoved him against the car and placed him in handcuffs leaving him in the back of a police car for 20 minutes. None of the officers knew who he was.
Watch: Here’s an ESPN reporter who happened to be on the scene:
Here’s the scene shortly after Scheffler was arrested.
New: Statement from Scheffler to ESPN:
This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today. Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.
Consumer Debt
A growing number of Americans are falling further behind on credit card payments.
Details: In Q1 of 2024, nearly 1 in 5 credit card users had maxed out their credit limits in the previous quarter. The number of these credit card users who have fallen into delinquency rose to 1 in 3 which is a significant increase from pre-pandemic levels.
Context: The average credit card balance has surged to $6,218 with US consumers owing a collective $1.02 trillion. Economists claim the 8.5% increase is another sign that prices continue to exceed wages and that many Americans are using credit cards to fill the gaps in family budgets.
