The Show Notes: SCOTUS Gun Ruling, Biden Makes History, & Powell's Dissent

ewerickson.substack.com

🚨 🚨 BREAKING:

The Supreme Court just struck down a 100-year-old New York law requiring individuals to show proper cause to obtain a concealed carry license to carry a gun outside the home. The 6 - 3 decision is expected to impact gun laws in six additional states that represent 25% of the population. Here’s more from AP. Jeffrey Toobin did not handle the news well:

Biden approval falls fourth straight week, tying record low

This is from Reuters:

U.S. President Joe Biden's public approval rating fell for a fourth straight week to 36% matching its lowest level last seen in late May, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll completed on Wednesday.

The president's approval rating has stayed below 50% since August, a warning sign that his Democratic Party could lose control of at least one chamber of the U.S. Congress in the Nov. 8 midterm elections.

Biden’s negative down-ticket effect is forcing Democrats to adopt more moderate positions to appease swing voters. In Georgia, Stacey Abrams reversed course and announced she supports funding police after serving as a board member for an organization that opposed funding police. Her opponent, Governor Kemp, has already approved a $5,000 raise for all state employees and a $1,000 bonus for police and firefighters.

Inflation Complicates Biden’s Deliberations on Student Loan Forgiveness

This is from The New York Times:

The soaring cost of food, gasoline and other staples is further complicating a fraught debate among President Biden and his closest advisers over whether to follow through on his campaign pledge to cancel thousands of dollars of student loan debt for tens of millions of people.

While Mr. Biden has signaled to Democratic lawmakers that he will probably move forward with some form of student loan relief, he is still pressing his team for details about the economic ramifications of wiping out $10,000 of debt for some — or all — of the nation’s 43 million federal student loan recipients.

Not ‘Putin’s Price Hike’: Fed chair Powell breaks with Biden on inflation

This is from The New York Post:

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Wednesday broke with President Biden’s repeated attempts to blame Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine for the highest inflation in 40 years.

Powell, confirmed last month to a second term as chairman, explained to the Senate Banking Committee that “inflation was high before” the Feb. 24 Russian invasion of Ukraine, which increased global food and energy prices.
