Shooting
A white gunman murdered three African Americans at a Dollar General in Jacksonville, Florida in what authorities are calling a racially motivated attack. “This shooting was racially motivated, and he hated Black people” claimed Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters in a Saturday evening press conference.
Why this matters: The shooting is leading headlines because the 21-year-old gunman - who lived at home with his parents - had no criminal record and used an AR-15 he legally purchased earlier this year. The shooter drew swastikas on his gun and left a detailed manifesto at his parent’s home confirming the attack was racially motivated.
DeSantis: Governor Ron DeSantis spoke at a prayer vigil honoring the victims on Sunday and was heckled by protestors before a Democrat City Councilmember quelled the protests.
Sheriff: Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said, "The story is always about guns — people are bad — this guy's a bad guy. If I could take my gun off right now, and I lay it on this counter, nothing will happen. It'll sit there — but as soon as wicked person grabs ahold of that handgun and starts shooting people with it — there's the problem." - Full clip here.
Newsom
The White House is increasingly frustrated with California Governor Gavin Newsom on multiple fronts according to confidential sources reporting to NBC.
Biden: While the Biden team no longer views Newsom as a possible primary challenger in 2024, they are increasingly concerned that his pending debate with Ron DeSantis offers more downside than upside.
Harris: The Vice President’s team is equally frustrated with Newsom viewing the DeSantis debate as a way of leapfrogging her for 2028 presidential positioning. It is noteworthy that Harris declined a similar debate opportunity with DeSantis following her controversial statements about Florida’s school curriculum.
Perspective: The leak comes the same day an AP poll reveals 3 in 4 Americans believe Biden is too old for a second term which includes 69% of Democrats.
