Clip of the day: ???
Speaker McCarthy
Kevin McCarthy secured the votes to become house speaker early Sunday morning shortly after midnight. A small group of Republican holdouts relented to growing pressure after 14 failed votes. While not all of them voted for McCarthy, enough voted “present” to lower the threshold needed to allow McCarthy to win.
What happened: McCarthy thought he had the necessary votes to become speaker on the 14th vote shortly after 11 PM on Saturday. The vote failed and it appeared the house would adjourn until Monday.
Chief Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler told McCarthy-backer Marjorie Taylor Greene, “I need you to get (Donald Trump) on the phone right now.” Greene did and went around handing the phone to each of the McCarthy holdouts so Trump could implore them to vote for McCarthy.
Nope: Montana’s Matt Rosendale wanted no part in a conversation with Trump in what is the best picture from Saturday night. Look at the name on Green’s iPhone.
What else happened: Rep. Roger Williams was eager to get back to Texas to be with his wife who was undergoing treatment for a newly discovered brain tumor. Rep. Wesley Hunt’s wife was struggling with medical complications following the premature birth of their child. Both of these situations were pressed on Gaetz, Boebert, and others to relent so Williams and Hunt could return to their family.
Things got tense: Mike Rogers lunged at Matt Gaetz at the 14th failed vote on Saturday evening. Rogers has publically apologized since then.
Biden Wants To Ban Gas Stoves
Joe Biden’s Consumer Product Safety Commission may implement a ban on gas stoves to fight indoor air pollutants. The potential ban would impact millions of Americans and drive up costs for low-income families. Here’s the key paragraph from The American Gas Association at Bloomberg (paywall):
“The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and EPA do not present gas ranges as a significant contributor to adverse air quality or health hazard in their technical or public information literature, guidance, or requirements,” said Karen Harbert, the group’s president. “The most practical, realistic way to achieve a sustainable future where energy is clean, as well as safe, reliable and affordable, is to ensure it includes natural gas and the infrastructure that transports it.”

This is so fascinating. I skimmed through the article bemoaning the NYT hire of David French and discovered I disagree with French for all the polar opposite reasons from the author of the article.
Good luck Brandon on banning Gas stoves. Just stupid.
