The $70K CEO
Remember the CEO from a few years ago who raised everyone’s pay to $70K? His name is Dan Price. Price was lauded as “the only moral CEO in America,” made appearances on The Daily Show, and graced the cover of Esquire. Now, Dan Price is accused of raping a woman in a bombshell story from The New York Times. Check out the free version at The New York Post.
The Housing Recession
The National Association of Realtors and the National Association of Home Builders have declared that we are in a housing recession as sales plunged by 5.9% in July from June. This is the sixth consecutive month of declining home sales and a staggering total drop of 20% from a year ago. While sales have plunged, prices remain high. This is from WolfStreet:
“Sales volume has plunged because of unrealistic pricing. But the deals that did get done, got done at still very high prices, which is why so few deals got done.
The median price dipped to $403,800 in July, which whittled down the year-over-year increase to 10.8%. As big as it sounds, it was the smallest year-over-year increase since July 2020, after having spiked by 25%.”
Zaporizhzhia
The Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine is the latest flash point in the war. Russia is allegedly using the nuclear plant as a base to house troops and launch attacks against Ukrainian-controlled regions. Military analysts claim Russia is using Zaporizhzhia as a shield and plans to disconnect the plant from the Ukrainian power grid. Go deeper with CBS and Newsweek.
It Now Costs $300,000 to Raise a Child
This is from The Wall Street Journal:
“The cost of raising a child through high school has risen to more than $300,000 because of inflation that is running close to a four-decade high, according to a Brookings Institution estimate.
It determined that a married, middle-income couple with two children would spend $310,605—or an average of $18,271 a year—to raise their younger child born in 2015 through age 17. The calculation uses an earlier government estimate as a baseline, with adjustments for inflation trends.
The multiyear total is up $26,011, or more than 9%, from a calculation based on the inflation rate two years ago, before rapid price increases hit the economy, the Brookings Institution said.”
