Sabotage?
Germany claims someone sabotaged the Nord Stream pipeline system with a “violent act.” Three separate leaks simultaneously occurred in the politically charged pipeline connecting Russian natural gas to the rest of Europe. From Bloomberg:
It’s the clearest signal yet that Europe will have to survive this winter -- at least -- without any significant Russian gas flows. The pipelines were already out of action, but any hope that Moscow might have turned the taps back on at some point have now been dashed. Gas prices jumped.
Here are pictures of the leak.
Russia Has A Serious Problem
Russia’s attempt to draft an additional 300,000 soldiers to reinforce the current war in Ukraine has been an abject failure according to… Russia. The rare admission of guilt enforces the notion that Russia is having a difficult time selling the war at home. In the past seven days, 261,000 men have fled Russia to avoid the draft according to local media. Here’s the quote that matters from The New York Times (paywall):
“The lack of military trainers, and the haste with which Russia has started the mobilization, suggests that many of the drafted troops will deploy to the front line with minimal relevant preparation,” Britain’s defense intelligence agency said on Monday. “They are likely to suffer a high attrition rate.”
The Student Loan Price Tag
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released a projection that Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan would cost taxpayers $420 billion over the next decade. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget claimed taxpayers would be on the hook for an ADDITIONAL $120 billion to cover Biden’s lowered income-driven repayment plan. Read the full report here.
Woke Foods Plummet
The trendy fake meat industry is facing a significant revolt according to a Deloitte report at Bloomberg. The increasingly pricey plant-based meat alternative industry is seeing sales decline as Americans begin to question the health benefits and views fake meat companies as “woke.” The shift in consumer sentiment has sent the industry into a double-digit plunge. From Bloomberg (paywall):
Deloitte also suspects that the addressable market may be more limited than previously thought with a growing cultural resistance to its “woke” status — even among those seeking to reduce red meat consumption. Case in point: When Cracker Barrel announced plans to add Impossible Foods’ sausage to its menu over the summer, it faced an onslaught of criticism on social media.
