Hawaii
Over 1,000 people are still missing in Hawaii after devastating wildfires leveled the small town of Lahaina, Hawaii. The governor of Hawaii told CBS, “Some of the challenges are going to be extraordinary. As you reported, 85 percent of the… impact zone has been covered now by what amounts to an army of search and rescue teams and 41 dogs. So, 85 percent of the land has been covered.”
Details: The wildfires are still burning in Hawaii though roughly 80% contained as President Biden is scheduled to visit Maui later today.
Hurricane Hilary
The first tropical storm to hit Southern California in 84 years landed last night after Hurricane Hilary was downgraded following landfall in Baja California. The National Weather Service said Hilary broke “virtually all rainfall daily records.”
Context: Hilary capped out at a monstrous category 4 hurricane in the Pacific Ocean before making landfall in the Baja Peninsula. The storm was downgraded to a Tropical Storm before the eye crossed directly over Dodger Stadium late last night causing widespread flooding. Check out this picture.
Bonus: Go watch this massive debris plug flooding that is heading for Palm Springs.
Earthquake: To make matters worse, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake rocked a small town just outside of Los Angeles.
Polling
A brand new NBC News/Des Moines Register poll shows Donald Trump is up on his Republican challengers by a 23-point margin in the race to win the nation’s first primary state. The top three candidates were Donald Trump with 42% of the vote, Ron DeSantis pulling 19%, and Tim Scott earning 9% support. Every other candidate was at 6% or less.
Why this matters: Larry Hogan confirmed that No Labels will “very likely” offer a third-party presidential candidate if the 2024 race is between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
