The Gun Deal
This is from The Reload:
The Senate released the finalized text of its gun deal on Tuesday, adding new kinds of gun prohibitions to federal law.
The package extends current prohibitions on gun sales to those who have disqualifying juvenile records and those convicted of misdemeanor violent crimes against “dating partners.” The bill also includes a new background check process for those 18 to 20 years old, funding for “Red Flag” laws or other state crisis intervention programs, the reclassification of who must obtain federal gun dealing licenses, and several other proposals. A bipartisan group of Senators praised the deal as an appropriate response to the recent elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Chevron To Biden: Make Up Your Mind
The CEO of Chevron wrote a public response to President Biden’s letter from earlier this month demanding oil companies pump more oil to bring down gas prices. The problem with Biden’s demand is oil companies have a 10-20 year profitability horizon for new drilling ventures. Biden made it clear in the Democratic primary that oil companies should be shut down so why make expensive investments under an administration that wants them closed? The response from Chevron was as nuanced as you might imagine but took this shot at Biden.
We need clarity and consistency on policy matters ranging from leases and permits on federal lands, to the ability to permit and build critical infrastructure, to the proper role of regulation that considers both costs and benefits. Many of these elements are described in our industry’s recently released 10-point plan. Most importantly, we need an honest dialogue on how to best balance energy, economic, and environmental objectives – one that recognizes our industry is a vital sector of the U.S. economy and is essential to our national security.
DeSantis declines to ask Trump for reelection endorsement
This is from Politico:
Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has plenty of advantages ahead of his November reelection. More than $100 million in the bank. A growing statewide Republican voter advantage. Massive popularity with the conservative base.
What DeSantis doesn’t need and isn’t requesting: former President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
According to four people connected to the governor and former president, DeSantis has not asked Trump for a formal endorsement and isn’t planning to. It’s a clear sign that DeSantis, who more than four years ago was a little-known congressman from northeast Florida, has risen high in the GOP stratosphere.
Officer husband of slain Uvalde teacher was detained, had gun taken away after trying to save wife
This is from KSAT:
Shocking testimony from the Texas DPS director on Tuesday has revealed even more insight into the “abject failure” of response to the Uvalde shooting that occurred on May 24.
Texas Department of Public Safety Director Col. Steven McCraw revealed that the husband of slain elementary teacher Eva Mireles tried to save her but was barred from doing so.
Ruben Ruiz is a police officer for the school district and was on the scene after the gunman entered the school and opened fire.
McCraw said Mireles called Ruiz and told him that “she had been shot and was dying.”
“And what happened to him, is he tried to move forward into the hallway,” McCraw said. “He was detained and they took his gun away from him and escorted him off the scene.”
