Price Controls

Kamala Harris is doubling down on her price control agenda by proposing a housing assistance plan that would incorporate up to $25K in down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers. The news is an extension of yesterday’s announcement that price-gouging in relation to food prices would be a top priority in the first 100 days of a Harris administration.

But even outlets like The New York Times are calling into question whether grocery stores are actually committing price-gouging:

Economists have cited a range of forces for pushing up prices in the recovery from the pandemic recession, including snarled supply chains, a sudden shift in consumer buying patterns, and the increased customer demand fueled by stimulus from the government and low rates from the Federal Reserve. Most economists say those forces are far more responsible than corporate behavior for the rise in prices in that period.

Gang Members at The Border

A Peruvian gang leader wanted for the murder of 23 Peruvians was caught by ICE just 150 miles from New York City. Gianfranco Torres-Navarro was previously caught and released at the border on May 16th in Texas before making his way north. Torres-Navarro is the leader of the notorious “Los Killers” gang in Peru, yet authorities only discovered his true identity more than two months after his initial release.
