Clip of the day:
How Trump Plans To Attack DeSantis
Mike Allen and Josh Kraushaar at Axios got the inside scoop on how Trump plans to attack DeSantis during the GOP primary. Here’s the five-point excerpt directly from Axios.
DeSantis' past support for changes to Social Security and Medicare, including votes as a U.S. congressman to raise the eligibility age for Medicare.
Disloyalty to Trump after he helped DeSantis get elected governor in 2018. Trump also plans to pound DeSantis on likability.
Trump wants to cast DeSantis as a lackey of former House Speaker Paul Ryan. On Trump's social-media site, Truth Social, he attacked Ryan this week as a loser who "couldn't get elected dogcatcher," and said he should resign or be fired as a Fox Corp. board member.
DeSantis' response to COVID is a top Trump target, even though the governor is known for resisting mask mandates. Trump plans to attack DeSantis' caution in the earliest days of the pandemic — and try to fight the issue to a draw. A March 2020 headline in the Tampa Bay Times said: "DeSantis orders major shutdown of beaches, businesses in Broward, Palm Beach." (DeSantis pushes back on this.)
DeSantis took heat for muddled comments, in a Fox News interview last week, about whether to maintain financial and military support for Ukraine. Trump plans to portray DeSantis as wishy-washy on the war, while he toes the MAGA line of cutting aid.
Democrats Fume At Biden
“F****** AMATEUR HOUR. HEADS SHOULD ROLL OVER AT THE WHITE HOUSE OVER THIS.” Those were the words of a House Democrat when word broke that Joe Biden sided with Republicans to kill the DC crime bill. The third-ranking Democrat in congresses voiced strong opposition to Biden’s decision as well.
Why this matters: 173 Democrats voted with what they assumed was Joe Biden’s intentions to nix the progressive crime bill only to have Biden change course and side with Republicans. The best part: Joe Biden’s team never called the DC mayor to warn that this was coming.
What was in the bill: The bill in question would undo most mandatory sentencing requirements for violent offenses as crime surges in Washington D.C. This year alone the nation’s capitol has seen a record-setting 94 carjackings.
Vice on DeSantis
The hyper-progressive media outlet Vice has a hilarious doom-and-gloom piece out bemoaning that if DeSantis gets his way, DEI efforts in Florida schools will be eliminated.
Barr: Declare War Against Cartels
William Barr at The Wall Street Journal (paywall) is reiterating the same thing I have said on Substack and on radio: declare war against the drug cartels. If you can’t read the full article, here are the two paragraphs that matter:
What will it take to defeat the Mexican cartels? First, a far more aggressive American effort inside Mexico than ever before, including a significant U.S. law-enforcement and intelligence presence, as well as select military capabilities. Optimally, the Mexican government will support and participate in this effort, and it is likely to do so once they understand that the U.S. is committed to do whatever is necessary to cripple the cartels, whether or not the Mexican government participates.
Second, the danger cartels pose to the U.S. requires that we confront them primarily as national-security threats, not a law-enforcement matter. These narco-terrorist groups are more like ISIS than like the American mafia. Case-by-case prosecution of individuals can be a part of an overall effort, but the only way to defeat them is to use every tool at our disposal inside Mexico. Merely designating the cartels as terrorist groups will do nothing by itself. The real question is whether we are willing to go after them as we would a terrorist group.
