Trump’s Legal Problems
Attorneys for President Trump and the federal government are heading to a South Florida courthouse this afternoon to make their case before a federal judge to determine whether Donald Trump will stand trial before the 2024 election. The Trump-appointed Judge Cannon will hear arguments from both sides before determining when and how the federal government’s classified documents case against President Trump will proceed.
When: The Trump team will lobby for a delayed trial that would be pushed beyond the 2024 election claiming it would be impossible to get unbiased jurors in the midst of a presidential election. Special Council Jack Smith preemptively set an aggressive timetable for an expedited trial later this year.
How: Donald Trump is facing dozens of charges under the Espionage Act for retaining classified documents at his Mar-A-Lago residence. Since the evidence is largely classified, each side will lobby Judge Cannon on how the evidence will be presented to jurors.
Georgia: The Georgia Supreme Court unanimously tossed out Trump’s request to shut down Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ probe into Trump’s interference in the 2020 election. A grand jury is meeting to consider possible charges relating to Trump’s phone call pressuring GA Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes.”
🚨 Breaking: Donald Trump received a letter from Jack Smith claiming he is the target of a criminal investigation surrounding Smith’s January 6th probe. It is likely he will be indicted in the near future. Note: This is a separate investigation from Smith’s classified document case.
