Tuckerless Fox
Tucker Carlson is out at Fox News. The top-rated host has parted ways with his longtime employer less than a week after Fox News settled with Dominion Voting Systems. Here’s the statement:
FOX News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways. We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor.
Mr. Carlson’s last program was Friday April 21st. Fox News Tonight will air live at 8 PM/ET starting this evening as an interim show helmed by rotating FOX News personalities until a new host is named.
Biden 2024
As Biden plans to announce his reelection campaign, a Washington Post (paywall) survey reveals Democrats are reluctantly accepting Joe Biden. The Post surveyed 130 Democrats of varying political persuasions across five swing states and found only 37% wanted Biden to be the nominee.
Ouch: Biden’s 37% stands in stark contrast to 73% of Republicans supporting Trump ahead of 2020 and 75% of Democrats supporting Obama ahead of 2012.
Despite the reluctance, the lack of alternatives and the prospect of reelecting Donald Trump has many of these Democrats ready to support Biden again.
Sudan
Hundreds are dead and thousands are injured as warring Sudanese generals have decimated the northeastern African country in just one week of fighting. Sudan sits at the geopolitically strategic intersection of Africa and the Middle East along the Red Sea and has been courted by world superpowers for decades over port access and mining rights.
The devolving situation has drawn the attention of Russia, China, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and others who wish to make geopolitical inroads in the region. Russia has backed the rebels by offering the assistance of Putin’s Wagner Group while neighboring Egypt is supporting the Sudanese military.
Afghanistan 2.0: The Biden administration deployed special forces to evacuate the US embassy staff but said no plan was in place to rescue the 20,000 Americans stuck in the country. European nations evacuated their embassy staff and citizens stuck in the country.
Why this matters: The lack of involvement from the United States has caused an international power vacuum that once again is likely to be filled by Russia or China.
Backstory: The Sudanese military leader and the rebel leader jointly seized control of the country in a military coup in 2021 before turning on each other. The rebel leader is widely considered to be the richest man in the country with an army of 70,000 fighters. Full story: WSJ, NYT, Axios, and CNN.
