Welcome! We now know the cops were reluctant to engage the Uvalde school shooter “because they could have been shot.”
New facts: The shooter (we refuse to use his name) fired shots outside for 12 minutes before entering the building.

Uvalde
Parents are livid at police in Uvalde, Texas after gut-wrenching details emerge about the timeline of the worst school shooting in over a decade. This is an excerpt from my morning piece on Uvalde. Read the full thing here.
The police who went inside took no action against the shooter because they were afraid they’d get shot. They waited for a tactical unit. Source.
The tactical unit took almost an hour to show up. Source.
Police outside the school pepper-sprayed, tased, and arrested parents trying to get in to save their kids. Source.
Police called out to kids to reveal their hiding positions, allowing the gunman to fire on the kids. Then they lied about the timeline. Source.
The delayed police response cost the lives of children. Source.
Parents pleaded with the police to storm the school. Source.
Gun Control
A bipartisan group of Senators are in the early stages of discussing gun-control reforms in the evenly split Senate. Punchbowl reports the reforms would primarult focus on red flag laws and an expanding background checks. Rick Scott, Marco Rubio, and Lindsey Graham are Republican Senators who have all shown some level of support for red flag laws. The discussion is approved by Mitch McConnell but any piece of legislations would need 60 votes to pass.
The Washington Post has a fascinating piece on the diminishing influence of the NRA. Here’s the intro:
Nearly a decade ago, the massacre of 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school threw the politics of gun violence into a state of suspension for a full week, as conservative politicians waited to hear from the powerful gun lobby, the National Rifle Association, before taking a stand.
This week, after another rampage, at a Texas elementary school that left 19 children and two teachers dead, Republican lawmakers didn’t wait for the NRA as they lined up within hours to rebuff any proposed gun-control measures.
Student Loan Forgiveness
The Biden administration is planning to forgive $10,000 in student loan debt per borrower after extensive internal debate. The plan would impact tens of millions of Americans but has been put on pause due to the shooting in Uvalde, Texas. This is from The Washington Post:
The White House’s latest plans called for limiting debt forgiveness to Americans who earned less than $150,000 in the previous year, or less than $300,000 for married couples filing jointly, two of the people said. It was unclear whether the administration will simultaneously require interest and payments to resume at the end of August, when the current pause is scheduled to lapse.
