The Growing Threat of China
Two Navy sailors were charged with spying for the Chinese government in a pair of indictments announced Thursday afternoon. The individuals provided “critical technology” in the form of detailed ship manuals and outlined vulnerabilities of US warships to a Chinese handler in exchange for thousands of dollars over multiple years. The move is the latest indication that China is increasingly interested in US naval capabilities on the west coast.
Hackers: The news comes days after bits of Chinese malware were discovered deep inside military computer networks designed to disrupt US military operations. Military analysts claim the malware is designed to hinder power grids, communications systems, and water supplies that support military bases around the world. While none of the malware was active, military experts claim it was aimed to disrupt a US response to a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
Coordinating with China: It now appears that US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm coordinated with the Chinese government just days before the Biden administration tapped domestic oil reserves to fight surging prices. The previously undisclosed closed-door talks between Granhold and China’s National Energy Administration have raised questions bout China’s influence within the Biden administration.
Reminder: Just last year a Chinese firm tried to buy obscure farmland adjacent to a US military base in North Dakota.

Unenthusiastic Democrats
Joe Biden’s reelection campaign has seen a significant dip in donors and fundraising in the first half of 2023 according to new data. The campaign is $30 million behind this point of the 2020 race and has seen 32 percent fewer donors in the second quarter of 2023.

Poll: While the bulk of media coverage of this ABC poll focuses on Trump, the most significant data point pertains to Biden. A paltry 33% of Americans have a favorable view of President Biden. The shockingly low numbers match a CBS poll on the economy and a Gallup poll on the ethics of the Biden administration.
More Polls
Trump’s commanding lead in the GOP appears to be marginally softening in Iowa. Trump’s 35+ point lead nationally is now 23 points in Iowa according to a New York Times/Sienna poll. The same poll reported earlier this week that Trump and Biden are statistically tied in national polling.
An Emerson College poll claims that Trump and Biden are tied in Michigan in a hypothetical matchup. The news is noteworthy as most pollsters omit Michigan from the list of potential swing states.
