I would like to support a candidate who is for American values. Trump is now a private citizen. He has limited power over opinion in normal times but much less in this cancel culture war. His followers in government did little when he was in power and they have no right to complain. I read an article years ago titled something like The Ruling Class Vs The Country Class. Politicians Vs the people. All the politicians do is try to gain power for themselves and their cliques. The people be dammed.

The other danger for the Republicans, in my opinion is Caitlyn Jenner / Bruce Jenner. Mental instability. Out of the frying pan into the fire! Dan Purdy

I understand Jenner is supported by the California Trump machine. He/she is totally unqualified for the job but would probably get my vote over Comrade Gavin Newsom.

Before going scorched-earth by loudly trashing Trump for not immediately building the wall, one-time conservative media darling Ann Coulter often used the term "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" to describe inexplicable Republican tactics and strategy. This appears to be an excellent example.

The biggest problem the GOP has is Donald Trump. He will tear down the party and the country if necessary to get at the few Republicans with enough guts to take a stand against this wanna-be Hitler. Donald Trump is a vindictive, childlike white collar criminal who, even in defeat, is still worshiped by power hungry Trumpist (they are not Republican) politicians. Stefanic is a Trumpist, not a conservative, part of the leg-humping cult of personality that passes for what used to be the Party of Reagan. He needs to go away so we CAN focus on Sleepy Joe's socialist, woke crap.

Ms. Stefanik is described as "more moderate" than Ms. Cheney. Perhaps it is time to abandon the Orwellian/leftist manipulation of language, as staying that course is not a straight path to success, it's a circular path in mediocrity. Ms. Stefanik isn't moderate, she's simply "even less conservative" than Ms. Cheney, who isn't cinservative either.

If capital-R Republicans treat their base with so little respect as to go back to "business as usual," in order to satisfy the money people, we will remind the country that the GOP was itself started as a third party. Maybe the moniker, "Grand Old Party" should also be done away with. R is no longer grand, self-descriltion as ossified is not a compliment, and elected office isn't a reason to party.

Thomas Jefferson: "The government you elect is the government you deserve." You're right.

We, the electorate, need to demand better candidates and do a better job of vetting them.

I am so glad you are now focusing on the real political problem instead of the experimental vaccine BS. Being libertarian I'm, not a fan or people kissing the ring and leg humping for support.

You know why Erick. Stefanik kisses his butt and Cheney tells the uncomfortable truth. God, I hate what the Republican party has become. At this rate I'll never have a political home again.

I feel your pain. I'm not a Democrat, but I can't be a Republican when they are this crazy.

With you there. As much as it pains me, I'll be considering 3rd party candidates it seems in the next few election cycles.

I literally have never voted for a democrat in my life. I'm 50 years old, but if forced to choose between Biden and Trump, I would choose Biden at this point. The risk to the country is less with him. We can recover from another 4 years of democrat control. I'm not sure we could recover from 4 more years of Trump. (I haven't voted for anyone for President the last two elections)

Sorry, but you are not right about your contention that we “can recover from another 4 years of Democrat control”. The simple truth is that we cannot, especially if the Democrats can get H.R. 1, with its elimination of all election integrity rules and legitimization of ballot harvesting, passed. The Joe Biden agenda must be frustrated now and he must be defeated in 2024. It seems that while Liz Chaney isn’t a perfect choice to hold the position she now holds, Elise Stefanik would be far worse.

That Ms. Stefanik kissed up to Trump and managed to get him to make yet another poor personnel decision is on Trump, not her. For all her very real shortcomings, it seems that Liz Chaney should be kept in her present position, but closely watched.

The 2020 election went off without a hitch and both sides are trying to gain an advantage with election bills now. There was no grand fraud in the election. You know how the Republicans could have stopped HR1? Have Donald Trump admit he lost and move on with his life and there would still be a Republican Senate. Time after rime after time, Trump has screwed over the Republicans and the keep coming back for more. He passed a red line with me in January. Anything the Democrats do now is because the Republicans allowed it with their Trump worship. I'm not supported Biden at all, but I'm sure as hell not supporting Trump. Elections have consequences and he lost fair and square.

All Trump cares about is that Stefanik was one of his defense team in the House during impeachment, and that Liz voted to cinvict. Voting records don't matter.

HOW DO WE GET THIS MESSAGE TO TRUMP? Stop the "Administrative_state" madness. I seriously hope he has someone he trusts that will get this article to him so he can avoid the poor replacement. What a mess!

Expand full comment

LOL. He doesn't care. Trump likes Democrats who support him over Repulicans that don't (not that Stefanik is a Democrat, but she's more of one that Cheney).

There's only one major issue that the current GOP cares about, and they told us what it was in their 2020 "platform:" absolute fealty to the god-king.

Expand full comment

He/they do not care. All that counts is fealty to the Great Trump. It's a cult of personality that would make Stalin and Mao green with envy.

...Unless that's where the party leadership wants to go? Or is it just that she's a woman with a strong support base of GOP women she encouraged into politics?

As you mentioned the other day, McCarthy and others are humping Trump's leg. That's all they think about. The GOP is an embarrassment. They seem to think somehow, they can take back the House next year. Maybe they will. But from where I sit, I would not be surprised if the lost more seats to the Democrats. Perhaps if they concentrated on good government, they wouldn't have to be concerned what Donald Trump thinks.

Expand full comment

They really don't deserve to win it, even though they probably will. I'm a lifelong Republican, but I'm seriously concerned about what happens after 2024 if they control the House and Senate. There's absolutely no way Trump could ever win a general election again, but they might feel the need to put him in office regardless of the results.

Why doesn't he know this? Or rather, how does he NOT know this?

Expand full comment

Unfortunately, they don't care. The only issue most Republican members of Congress are concerned with right now is bending over for Donald Trump. They will throw anyone away who doesn't treat Donald Trump as the second coming of Jesus.
