I think my favorite line from last night's speech was one that reminded me of the problem I have with the slogan, "Make America Great Again." I mean, was America great once upon a time, reacquired its greatness when Trump was President, but has now lost it again?

At this point, I'm a pretty old dude. And I'm black. That means I was alive at a time when my people were denied their civil rights and treated horribly in this country. That said, THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A TIME IN MY LIFE WHEN MY COUNTRY WAS NOT THE GREATEST ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH, even when led by people with whom I disagreed. We may very well have an illegal immigration problem, but the way I see it, this country is in fact so great that people will break the law and risk their very lives in order to get here. Viewed in this way, that ain't such a bad problem to have.

Quoting the President: "You can't love your country only when you win."

I fall back on your exact thought as the basis for the tructh about the Greatness of America, Neil. People literally die to come here..and not just from where they can easily walk over the border. Perfect? No, but perfection is for some other "world".

Peace. out. Joe

No way I could watch it so I just caught up on highlights (i.e. lowlights) and commentary. The paid Democrat shills were blowing up X with the same talking point that it was the greatest speech in history. Forget Churchill, Lincoln, MLK Jr. and even Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. Those were trash compared to Biden last night. Nobody bought it. Hell, they don't even believe it themselves. They're just evil people and hate America.

It's difficult to Arkancide a president, Cheese. So, they're are stuck with the ego they created by elevating this truly stupid and vain man. Now? It's time to put as much lipstick on the pig as possible. I do not see how this can work. I know they have a plan, but to drug Biden for a few moment of clarity once in a while is one thing. Doing it regularly, is dangerous. Can you imagine that they just gave him his "juice" and then N. Korea launched a missile at a ship or some other defcon event? No way Biden could be trusted...and they know it. Then, there are the deliterous affects of drugging an old man again and again.

His speech was pretty much what I thought it would be. An angry, hyper partisan campaign speech designed to unite and charge up his base. That was not a SOTU in any way. Frankly, the Gold Star father calling for Biden to remember the Marines he got killed was the highlight of the event.

I don't know if your comments about Senator Britt were slapped in there so you can avoid having to deal with her detractors, but it is unfair and less than what I've come to expect from you. My wife and I found her comments engaging and genuine. She hit home on the issues facing regular families every day. She did as good a job as I have seen in quite some time.

Expand full comment

I found her delivery melodramatic and her language hyperbolic. The constant swinging from catastrophic imagery to a bright and glorious future was jarring and unnecessary. She didn't do a bad job, but I believe Erick Erickson is correct, a rebuttal would have been more effective coming from Trump directly.

Expand full comment

Eric is currently on his show speaking about being "attacked" on this issue and yet like yourself, making it about making Trump the person to deliver the response. These are two different issues. I have no problem with Trump making doing the response, but he didn't. That does not warrant an attack on Britt. To say she was melodramatic and hyperbolic is to not have any perspective about our current culture around politics...Trump, who I DO plan to vote for, is the king of hyperbolic retoric.

Expand full comment

I absolutely understand the current political culture and hyperbole is the rule of the day. That doesn't mean it's appropriate, productive or appealing. I think most Americans are sick of the constant hysteria. We want calm, decisive, effective, transparent leadership. Tell us how you're going to accomplish that. Period. We already know how much the other guy sucks. I also plan to vote for Trump. He's the only rational choice at this point, but if Republicans don't learn how to communicate more effectively with the general voting public, he may not win.

I still think she did a good job and on that point I guess we will have to agree that we disagree. It still did not warrant a vapid, drive-by attack by Erick.

After the speech a listener still has to go to the store for food buy gas pay the mortgage etc etc and the old it’s Trumps fault line is not going to work

I agree. At the end of the day, people understand that it's harder to care for their families now than it was when Trump was President.

I was expecting Biden to give such a speech, only because it's worked for him in the past.... and what a rotten speech it was. And here we thought that Obama was divisive and partisan....

In watching some of the post SITU coverage , I enjoyed Marco Rubio's line about Biden's 'Two state solution' not being about Israel & Gaza, but about Michigan and Minnesota, both states with large Muslim populations.

I was tremendiusly impressed by Katie Britt's response. I thiught Sarah Huckabee Sanders was good last time, but Britt was great.

"Lincoln Riley"? Seriously? Her name's only been in the news every day for 2 weeks... but not on the networks the Biden Admin watches, I guess.

The Dems are so divorced from reality that they'll think the recruiting crises in our military is because the economy is so good people don't have to join the military because they have no other options.

My dad (a fellow political junkie and 30+ year Rush listener) texted me last night to see if I had my ice cream cones ready to watch the State of the Union. I told him that no amount of ice cream cones could get me to watch that train wreck. I'm grateful to everyone who took one for the team. Thanks for the feedback.

You were doing it wrong. The cones were to be inserted rectally, then the SOTU wouldn't have bothered you at all.

Next, expect to see one helluva effort and legislation to get every single illegal on the voting rolls so they all can vote, the “right” way, in November. Never mind all that citizenship silliness. That’s why they’re here anyway, correct?

When I have to sign the voting book to verify my signature, I’m tempted to flip a few pages to see if my dead neighbor is still listed.

A few weeks ago I signed the petition to get Kennedy on the ballot in Georgia. I had to show ID and verify that my address and signature matched that of my voter registration. Kennedy obtained all the necessary signatures in Georgia, and the DNC has filed a formal complaint with the FEC over the collected signatures. The Dems will do anything they can to keep American citizens from voting for Kennedy or Trump, but they'll bend over backwards for non-citizens.

I think both democrats and republicans are underestimating Kennedy and at their own peril. I keep telling people he is going to pull from both republicans and democrats and even more from independents.

For me, a lot will depend on the VP choices of both Trump and Kennedy. With the ages of the candidates this year and the unprecedented desire of their opponents to "take them out" (through prosecutions or more nefarious means), the Veep selection has never been more important.

I watched both Biden and Britt. Actually liked Britt. Enjoyed when she said that it’s been a long time since Biden pumped gas or pushed a shopping cart. The emphasis on regular people versus Biden old and out of touch was very good.

It is true desperation and a blatant attempt at appeasement of the radical left to a build a “pier” to allow delivery of “humanitarian aid” to a people fighting Israel when these same people can end the war instantly by suing for peace. The failure of the Arab world to provide this aid is consistent with their past disdain for these people.

So who builds the pier, how are they protected, and who monitors what comes in? What happens to the pier once it is no longer needed? No money for Ukraine but money for a pier?

A competition for naming the pier is in order: how about “Port Dearborn” to recognize the area in Michigan whose large voting segment the President is attempting to appease; or, perhaps, just to simplify things, call it “Port Joe” to be abandoned at some future date lock, stock and barrel.
