I believe Biden would be the favorite in a rematch with Trump. He has more money and fewer indictments. Likewise, for the GOP, they’d have to spend so much to get Trump across the finish line they’d potentially fail to pick up the Senate and possibly lose the House. But, right now, Donald Trump is beating Joe Biden in the Real Clear Politics polling average and is otherwise generally tied with Biden.
Likewise, the Washington Post notes Donald Trump is exceeding expectations with black and Hispanic voters, many of whom feel left behind by Joe Biden’s economy. It’s so bad that the Post’s Perry Bacon is telling Democrats they should stand behind Joe Biden because Kamala Harris will take over when he drops dead.
That’s not exactly a ringing defense of standing behind Biden.
CBS News now has Trump ahead. Reuters’ polling is raising red flags for Biden. YouGov has red flags too.
In last month’s Yahoo News/YouGov poll, President Biden led former President Donald Trump by a solid margin (47% to 41%) in a hypothetical Election Day matchup between the 2024 Democratic and Republican frontrunners.
Before that, Biden had led Trump in every Yahoo News/YouGov poll since February, and in 10 of the 11 Yahoo News/YouGov polls conducted this year.
But over the last few weeks of summer, Biden’s consistent advantage has evaporated amid growing concerns about his age and fitness for another term — as well as a long-shot impeachment push by House Republicans.
Meanwhile, Trump appears to be gaining momentum despite the 91 criminal charges lodged against him since the start of 2023.
Trump and Biden are now tied in the Yahoo News/YouGov poll.
An incumbent President with a 39% approval rating is tied with his predecessor, whom people loathe just as much. That is not a sign of a strong campaign.
Add to that, Biden has already had to start spending money. It is September, more than a year before the general election, and Biden is spending money to boost his favorability with Democrats, not independents. His ads have run during 60 Minutes — independents and curious Republicans are not watching that. Democrats are.
At this point, in the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Twenty Three, every single impediment to the Democrats’ hold on power is labeled a “threat to democracy.” Cornell West is a threat to democracy. Donald Trump is a threat to democracy. Ron DeSantis is a threat to democracy.
It is only a matter of time before Democrats conclude Joe Biden is a threat to democracy because, in 2020, he was the candidate most likely to beat Trump and is now the candidate most likely to lose to Trump and every other Republican.
Biden claims he felt called in 2020 to get in to stop Trump. He might now only be able to stop Trump by getting out. But no wise men from the Senate can go to him, as they once did Nixon, and make his leave because they’re all just as old and feeble.
But Democrats, pay attention — Trump and Biden are tied and Biden is already spending money in September of 2023 just to keep his head above water. And Trump? He’s got a Fani Willis-inspired mugshot that’s made him quite popular and provided him a new source of fundraising.
Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt, y’all. Also, it might not be wise for Democrats to keep helping Donald Trump.
I may be wrong but I don't recall an incumbent President's campaign feeling the need to run so many TV ads over a year before the election. It just smells like fear to me that they have to pump up his alleged accomplishments at this point. I guess that's what polling numbers in the toilet does to you.
My month old puppy could beat Biden.
