In Michigan, Congressman Peter Meijer (R) is up for re-election. He is being opposed in the Republican Primary by a man named John Gibbs. Meijer voted to impeach Trump and Gibbs has Trump’s endorsement.
Meijer is a veteran and one of the congressmen who sneaked into Afghanistan to see how the withdrawal was coming. Much of what we know about the disaster that was the Afghan withdrawal comes from Meijer’s first-hand observations and his talks with soldiers on the ground.
Gibbs is an election truther who believes the November 2020 election was stolen and also believes the January 6th incursion into the capital was in defense of democracy and was a good thing.
Democrats are pouring money into the race to help Gibbs beat Meijer. That’s right. The party that believes January 6th was the worst thing ever is pouring money into the race to help a man who thinks January 6th was one of the best things ever.
The ad the Democrats are running in the Republican primary attacks Gibbs for getting endorsed by Trump and being too conservative. But the premise behind the ad is that if Gibbs’ name ID is boosted and he is tied to Trump, enough Republicans will turn out to help Gibbs at Meijer’s expense that Gibbs will win the nomination.
You’d think maybe Representatives Cheney and Kinzinger would realize their Democratic colleagues are hypocrites and not that worried about what happened on January 6th. You’d think they’d protest and maybe walk away from the investigation, given the Democrats’ willingness to fund these sorts of candidates.
But nope.
Democrats don’t really care about January 6th, and funding these sorts of candidates shows it is all situational ethics and opportunism, not principle.
Cheney et al. are IMHO running on pure dislike of Trump more than justice for January 6.
I know you like Cheney, and I respected her parents. However, she and Kinzinger (check out his tweets) are at best useful idiots. They’ll both have a slot on MSNBC next year.
