Happy Birthday to my mom.
Donald Trump is the presumptive GOP nominee. Nikki Haley did well in New Hampshire, but she still lost and that loss came with disproportionate help from non-Republican voters who showed up to support her. She says she will stay in. She might get to South Carolina, her home state, but donor pressures will come to bear and she, like DeSantis, will withdraw.
She has put up a good fight. But Trump will be the nominee. Below is my commentary from last night on the issue.
Trump should go to the border in Texas. The border is, right now, a bigger issue than inflation, the economy, crime, climate change, abortion, and every other issue. The border is the top issue for voters who only vote in the general election. Trump can own the issue.
Just the other day, Joe Biden said there was no crisis at the border. His approval rating on the issue is around 22%. The only fight Biden has in him for the border is fighting Texas’s efforts to secure it. Today, after having won a Supreme Court (temporary) victory, Biden’s crew isn’t rushing to take up the razor wire. Meanwhile, because the Supreme Court said Biden’s Administration could remove the border wire, but did not explicitly prohibit Texas from laying border wire, Texas is continuing to lay border wire.
Trump, going to the border, would force the issue onto a national press reluctant to cover the issue. It is an issue that a majority of voters agree with Trump about. It highlights a fundamental weakness of Biden’s tenure in office. It is a complete win. Trump should move his campaign to the border before going to Nevada and South Carolina.
In 2016, Trump campaigned on “fixing” the problem at the Mexican border - “... and Mexico will pay!” He even campaigned with a man who dressed in a “wall” outfit. In 2017, Trump did.......... nothing. Trump waited until 2019 - after the Democrats took the House - to play the victim and try to take any action. He wound up doing a little bit by EO and wrenched a small bit of money to repair existing border fence out of Pelosi. Mexico never paid. But, hey, sure: keep putting your faith in “Lucy” Trump to not pull the proverbial football away, Charlie Brown Republicans.
i think you're right, Erick; i appreciate your practical advice. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your Mom!
Before, during, and after my military and corporate careers, i've been 'independent' politically. In the past i've voted for a 3rd party candidate even when i recognized the chance of winning was 'unlikely.' i've learned that was a bad choice in this fallen/imperfect world. This year, my strong preference was/is for Ron Desantis. (i'm not so impressed with Ms Haley, but i will vote for her if she's the candidate.) That said and--assuming DJT will be the Republican candidate if he isn't taken out by lawfare (or worse)--i will vote for him against ANY Democrat candidate. Why? It's for the policies he represents versus the policies represented by virtually all of the Democrat voices. Sadly, from comments posted here by some folks, it appears they will vote against DJT's personality even though they agree with many/most of his policies. De-facto, that is obviously repeat obviously a vote for the policies of his democrat opponents. It's time for all-hands-on-deck for defeat of Biden (or whoever).
