Your paragraph regarding a dysfunctional Congress, progressives having no desire to stand up to labor unions, and Republicans not wanting to help Democrats avoid an economic catastrophe perfectly synopsizes the problem with governments big and small: NOBODY is interested in doing what's best for the country because that would require solutions and compromise. It's so much easier - and lucrative - to vilify the other side and ramp up the outrage machine.
I find it hard to believe that the railroad will be allowed to strike. I flew for a major airline, till forced to retire, and the Railroad Labor Act does not allow for railroads or airlines to strike without the government getting deeply involved. The unions can talk and thump their chests all they want, but the federal government must allow them to strike. I think this is all bluster so that Biden can step in at the last minute and take credit for stopping the strike.
Even President Roosevelt knew unionized government employees would be a bad thing. When they go on strike who are they striking against? I worked for the water department in Tampa. When it became legal for us to unionize we had no choice. Our boss took us all outside at the end of the day and told us we were unionized. That was it. I have never liked unions. They have more to say about your job than your employer. When I was laid off during the 70's ( a union member ) I was told to go to the union hall
and wait and I would be called. I had a new child so I applied for my unemployment and worked on the side and spent time applying for jobs. One of the folks from my church took me to a commercial bakery
and they put me on the night shift. So when I got home from work in the morning I had to chose if I was
going to continue to look for a job or sleep. Finely I was successful in finding a job that would replace my original job. Thank you Lord. Dan
Glenn Beck predicted we would need bleach soon, stock up. That was 6 months ago. Luckily I don’t need chlorine for a water system. I do need electricity . Biden is headed overseas to view the Queen’s Funeral a prelude to his future as he continues to age. The five hundred dignitaries flying in should alarm Greta but it’s the public who causes climate change. He could save fuel by flying a Gulfstream or just positioning a few electric cars there but since Climate Change is a Hoax . He’s not worried because it’s your fault not his.Spendthrift is is nickname.
Report this morning says they reached a “tentative” deal overnight.
I don’t like unions and this one seems completely inept at their stated purpose. If they are going to exist need to do a better job “protecting” their workers.
The first thing republicans need to do when they get back power is to outlaw public sector unions. Private sector can do their own thing, but the tax payers should not be fleeced by unions who contribute to democrats.
This is my issue with unions: 115,000 people will bring the economy of a nation of 332,000,000 to a standstill. I sympathize with the workers concerns but still despise the situation the unions cause.
I am not discounting your concern, as I share it. Railroad workers don’t just strike willy-nilly. They are governed by the Railway Labor Act, which is written to heavily favor companies. Getting to the point of a cooling off period and looming strike means a mediator appointed by the National Mediation Board has exhausted all options between the two parties and has released them to self help—ie, a strike or a lockout. (I neglected to mention the Presidential Emergency Board, but suffice it to say, it is a structured, drawn out process).
I work under the provisions of the RLA and have a healthy degree of empathy for the railroad workers.
What I'd like to see from the Republicans running and the crew up in DC is some strategy of how they are going to get us out of this unholy mess. Unveiling the plan after being elected is not good enough, especially for swing voters who are not particularly Conservative.

Doom for them cannot come soon enough.

The WSJ is reporting a strike has been averted.
