The Supreme Court on Monday issued a revised transcript of oral arguments over a Biden administration vaccine rule that clarified a statement Justice Neil Gorsuch made about the number of annual flu deaths.
The original, uncorrected transcript quotes Gorsuch as saying he believes the flu kills "hundreds of thousands of people every year."
On Monday, however, the Supreme Court's press office issued a corrected transcript showing that Gorsuch actually said he believes the flu kills "hundreds, thousands of people every year."
I'm so done with this 'mess'. I cannot understand why the media and many of our government leaders have resorted to this level of fearmongering. I do understand that Covid-19 is a devastating virus especially for the obese (which the media is FINALLY reporting on)and folks with other underlying health conditions.
My 67 year old husband just recovered from Omicron. My family has not been vaccinated, we chose to socially distance and use masks. My husband did a short consult for his former employer and apparently, despite everyone being masked, he was infected. He ran a 102 degree fever for a few hours Christmas Eve, and then had what we call a 'head cold'. He had a sore throat, a mild cough and felt a bit drained. His biggest complaint was losing his sense of taste for about two weeks - that's it. I and our two adult daughters have been right there with him and we have yet to experience any problems.
The amount of misinformation that is being spread by media and government entities is more frightening to me than the virus. It makes me wonder just what and how much has been ceded to the pharmaceutical corporations.
I wager the 7 other justices with kids plus Kagan knew it was BS the moment she said it. Using the logic of the left that men can't comment seriously on abortion because they can't have kids does this mean that Sotomayor can't be taken seriously on this because she is not a parent?
Regarding hospital capacity - and this is based on what I have heard from friends in the medical industry - most (if not all) hospitals are operating at reduced capacity due to staffing shortages which have been caused by hospital enforced vaccine mandates. Plenty of beds available, just not the staff to support them. One of the local larger hospitals has two entire floors that are empty - full of beds - due to the self induced staffing shortage.
One other thing - I'm in SC; the news reports that there are very few ICU beds available, ostensibly due to increased Covid admissions. I had my doubts and went to the SC DHEC site where they keep data on the number of beds per hospital (statewide) that are being used.
I found that of the 1,676 ICU beds in the state, 1,317 beds were being used; which is what is being reported. What isn't being reported is that only 275 of those are people with Covid. They also do not state if the person is in the ICU due to covid OR if the person is in ICU for other reasons but has covid.
He got that wrong, but it was his one moment and seemed to conflate global data for US. She, on the other hand, contended that only unvaccinated people can get people infected; there are 100,000 kids in hospitals with many on ventilators; etc.
Because while it is incorrect, Goursh's figure can be tethered to some sort of reality. While the average number of deaths from seasonal flu is about half his estimate, some flu pandemics have resulted in 100,000 or more deaths in the US (1957, for example). He didn't suggest that the 800,000+ COVID death toll is merely a 'bad flu year'.
Sotomayor's figure has no such basis. Anyone with passing familiarity with the data, regardless of their interpretation, recognizes that the vast majority of hospitalizations and deaths have been adults. About 5 minutes of clicking on the CDC website will bring up a chart of hospitalizations by age group. There haven't been 100,000 hospitalizations of children under 17 *during the entire pandemic* (https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#new-hospital-admissions), let alone 100,000 children currently in the hospital and on ventilators.
I’m not arguing she’s right. She was wrong. So. Was. He. A really bad year has 60,000 flu deaths. A really good year has 12,000 flu deaths. Median is 30,000-40,000. Way short of 100,000. Five minutes on CDC web site would show that, too.

Was it also disinformation when Gorsuch said that 100,000 people die from the flu each year? Just curious.

You seem very understanding…of his mistake.

In the U.S. or world wide?
At least word wide Gorsuch is correct. Even world wide Sotomayor is wrong.
World wide seasonal influenza-related respiratory illnesses annual deaths are between 291,000 and 646,000. (CDC)
Going back to 2010, U.S. flu deaths range from 12,000-61,000 (CDC)
He was talking US.
