Enjoy the Masters with your son, have a wonderful day. So sad that people keep looking for the easy scapegoat, and cower and throw others to the wolves 1st rather than work together to remove the threat. The Christian Lebanese that grew up with that war still believe the US should have helped stop Hezbollah then. Iran terrorist regime has long been of death.

Not really but, in this case he's warning people to be careful, maybe take a second look. Anything wrong with that?

I know people get all crazy when Trump goes off, like they forget, the man is a New Yorker. You punch at a New Yorker, they're gonna punch back harder. Have you not MET a New Yorker? I think they ought to quit focusing so much on his venting about people who have stabbed him in the back and let him do his job. I think there is a strategy in all of this. I could be wrong, but that's what I believe.

Holy smokes!! Talk about diarrhea of the mouth! Someone please take that phone away from Trump, he's clearly giving ammunition to those who continually seek to take us down a notch. On a separate and more delightful matter, enjoy a fabulous day at the Masters. I'm guessing a visit to the store will be on the way out, since you'll be loaded down with all that amazing merch. I'm hoping you'll provide us a tour of your purchases, lol.

I’ve been to the Master’s 4 times! I was there the year Greg Norman collapsed and Tiger made up 6 strokes on the final day. (1998?) Enjoy it! It’s impossible not to.

Nitpick: Hezbollah was not a thing in 1982. They called themselves Islamic Jihad and became Hezbollah in 1983.

One does not have to be an "elite" to realize that the USA is not winning the war with Iran in a strategic sense, at least not for now. We are certainly winning tactically, but winning battles (especially by bombing alone) does not a war win. Right now, Iran still has its nuclear material, its regime is still in power and, for the first time ever, it has complete control of the Strait. Trump is now between a rock and a hard place that he was not competent enough to anticipate. He has three choices. One, he can go all in and send in ground troops, and thereby repeat 2008 for the Republican Party, as did W with Iraq. Or, two, he can TACO and leave Iran empowered over the world economy by controlling the Strait and/or still in possession of its nuclear material, which he might be able to spin to his Trumpkin base as a "win" -- that base, however, will not be enough to carry Republicans to victory in 2026 or 2028. Or, three, he can sit back and hope (since he does not pray) that the unarmed people of Iran will magickly rise up and overthrow the regime -- but you know what they say about "hope." This is why no president should never enter a war without having the American people committed to winning it, no matter what it takes, from the start. Trump apparently never considered that this could become a "real war" for the USA. Had he made his case and sought congressional war powers approval prior, not to mention support from our (former?) allies, he likely would have been denied by cooler heads. Perhaps someone could have convinced him that Iran is not Venezuela. But, instead, Trump had to be Trump and go it alone into the abyss -- which, along with tariffs, will likely be among the biggest political mistakes of his presidency.

Iran may have a temporary advantage in the Strait by disrupting the flow, but that's not control in the military sense. As for Trump's choices, you leave out the default position: sustained pressure without occupation.

Southern Planter's avatar

Not control in a military sense, I agree. But they do have control in a commercial sense. As long as they can fire missiles or drones from their 1,200 mile coastline, they can maintain that control and collect tolls (ransoms) from every ship that want to pass. And the companies that own those ships will pay. I also agree that we could have taken your default position, but that could have been done with strikes like the one back in June, which, so we were told, totally decimated Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Might be too late for that now.

Why should our "allies" have a veto, or even a say, in our hostilities with Iran?

Southern Planter's avatar

I did not say that they should have a veto. I said that they could have decided if they would offer support (or not) prior to Trump making the unilateral decision to launch a war. Asking them for support after the fact and without them having any prior input or even knowledge of Trump's plans, plus alienating them for the past 16 months, is not the way military alliances are successfully formed.

Glen Franklin Koontz's avatar

NATO is not a successful military alliance, and has not been for some time. NATO should be abandoned. The member countries are welfare dependents, not allies.

Southern Planter's avatar

Since its inception, NATO has been the most successful military alliance in modern history. It has helped European countries maintain their freedom while also allowing the USA to project power throughout the region. Can they contribute more? Sure they can and they should. We can get that without throwing the baby out with the bath water. Never know when we might really need some allies.

That quick victory in Venezuela was worse thing that could have happened to him. Reinforced his natural belief that he could do anything now. This one has potential to take down world economy but wouldn't bet on it yet.

I still think he TACOs. Just like with covid and withdrawing from Afghanistan. He's afraid of anything with a real potential for obvious failure.

Glen Franklin Koontz's avatar

President Trump did not withdraw from Afghanistan. He negotiated a framework, which Joe Biden botched. And he handled the pandemic far better than Joe Biden. And he has handled Iran better than any previous President. Get off his back, and seek a cure for your TDS. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

David Darnell's avatar

He negotiated the withdrawal in March 2020. Had 6 months to implement it. Too chicken to do it himself.

He turned acquisition of PPE and test kits over to the states, which explains why the U.S. had one of the highest covid incidence and death rates per capita in the world while Trump was president.

While Operation Warp Speed was a success the first firm (Pfizer) to come up with a vaccine only used it for distribution of the vaccine, not development.

You are right about the TDS but I blame that on my parents. From an early age they taught me to hate liars who were openly corrupt and mocked cripples, womens looks, etc. I'm trying to be open-minded like you Glen, but it just doesn't come natural to me. Be patient with me.

Glen Franklin Koontz's avatar

1. His framework did not call for implementation while in his 1st term. BIDEN BOTCHED IT.

2. WRONG! The federal government is not supposed to do absolutely everything, and frankly has no constitutional role in disease treatment/prevention. The high death rates occurred in Democrat States, where Democrat Governors BOTCHED their jobs.

3. The President does not lie, is not openly or covertly corrupt, and the rest of your screed . . . well, you have TDS.

David Darnell's avatar

Glen,, I humbly bend my knee to a more learned person. Everything you said, especially about Trump not lying or being the least bit corrupt is like words from heaven.

Southern Planter's avatar

Well, David, you have to keep in mind that Glen’s occupation is that of a criminal defense attorney. Therefore, he apparently feels the need to defend criminals and liars wherever he finds them. It’s called Trump Defense Syndrome — TDS for short.

Beverly's avatar

I think it also has something to do with his attention span: rather short.
